Ypsilanti's Integrated Sensing Systems weighing move to Ann Arbor

By Nathan Bomey

An Ypsilanti Township-based sensor technology company is weighing a move to Ann Arbor after striking a deal with a Swiss distributor earlier this year.

Integrated Sensing Systems may move its operation from Airport Industrial Drive in Ypsilanti Township to the former Tecumseh Products facility at 3885 Research Park Dr. in Ann Arbor. Anika and Associates, which owns the property, is applying for a tax abatement from the city of Ann Arbor.

Doug Sparks, executive vice president and director of flow products for ISSYS, confirmed that the company has identified the Research Park site as a potential future location. But he said ISSYS could still opt to expand its current facility.

The company’s expansion is connected to a deal with Switzerland-based Endress+Hauser Group, a $1.4 billion sensor distributor that plans to move several engineers to the Ann Arbor region to work alongside ISSYS. The Swiss deal is part of a $20 million investment deal ISSYS is almost ready to close, Sparks said.

Sparks said the Swiss deal created need for additional clean room space. The company leases its current 11,000-square-foot facility but needs about 30,000, and it's considering purchasing a facility.

“It’s all part of our expansion,” he said. “We need to be able to expand our labs.”

Murray Wikol, an agent for Anika and Associates and president of Bingham Farms-based development firm ProVisions LLC, declined to comment on the potential sale of the building.

The Ann Arbor City Council has scheduled a public hearing for Sept. 8 on the establishment of a industrial development district at the site, which would pave the way for approving a tax abatement.
