Legendary Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler will be featured in an episode of the Big Ten Network series "Big Ten Icons" at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The Wolverines host Minnesota prior to the episode, with kickoff slated for noon on BTN.

All around Neil Weissman stood reminders of the Bo Schembechler era at the University of Michigan.
Lloyd Carr, the longtime Schembechler assistant who went on to his own College Football Hall of Fame coaching career, was at the golf outing. So was Gary Moeller, who succeeded Schembechler as Michigan’s coach. Former player and current athletic director Dave Brandon supported the event. Former player and current broadcaster Jim Brandstatter was there, as were other ex-players and assistant coaches.

Michigan entered the 1981 football season ranked first in the country and poised for a national-championship run.
In an immediate letdown, Wisconsin’s physical rushing attack gashed the Wolverines’ defense for 197 rushing yards and ended their title hopes. Physically punished, Michigan lost its opener, 21-14.
Nearly 30 years later, not much has changed.
Most of the Big Ten has gravitated toward the spread offense, but Wisconsin’s remains similar to the one that overpowered the Wolverines that day.

When Bo Schembechler told his assistant coaches of his intentions to retire following the 1989 season, they asked him to reconsider.
“We said, ‘Hey, we’ll do the work and you just stay here,’” said Jerry Hanlon, the Michigan coaching legend’s longest-serving assistant. “Bo said, ‘If I can’t fully coach, I’m not going to do it, and the doctors said I shouldn’t.’”
For the better part of his career, Schembechler walked a tightrope trying to balance football and health.

There weren't many jobs that could convince David Brandon to leave his job as CEO of Domino's Pizza. The athletic director post at Michigan was one of them.
Brandon was introduced as the next Michigan athletic director, pending approval by the university's board of Regents later this month, in a teleconference Tuesday morning.

Schembechler transcended football, and his contributions to Michigan reach well beyond the athletic complex, said friends and doctors of Schembechler, who on Thursday gathered to honor him with the unveiling of a life-sized sculpture.
Schembechler, who battled heart disease for 37 years, worked with the Cardiovascular Center to engage the public on issues related to heart health. He died three years ago this week.

Confidence that grew for weeks that fall was in full bloom after a 51-6 victory over Iowa on Nov. 15, 1969, Michigan’s fourth consecutive blowout victory.

Paterno said he met with then Michigan athletic director Don Canham in Pittsburgh after the 1968 season.
“We talked, and he offered me the job when they hired Bo Schembechler,” Paterno said. ”And once a year Don used to write me a letter and say, ‘Thanks.’”

Some coaches are looking at trading some of the July period to get back the April recruiting period which was recently taken away by the NCAA.
