Michigan's offensive line should be a 'cornerstone' next year

Mark Huyge started 9 games for Michigan this year between right guard and right tackle, but the redshirt sophomore finished the season as the No. 1 backup at both positions.

“I had an OK season, but obviously there’s a lot, lot to work on,” Huyge said earlier this week during a charity appearance at The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County. “Just from overall technique to strength, just trying to get better so next year we’ll be in a good bowl game.”

With a day off from finals, Roy Roundtree figured it was the least he could do.

“It’s Christmas, you’re supposed to give back,” Roundtree said.

Roundtree, offensive lineman David Moosman and about 8 other Michigan football players and staff members volunteered their time at The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County’s annual “toy shop” Wednesday.

By this stage of his life, David Moosman has adjusted to moving from place to place.

Born in The Netherlands, the Michigan senior center jumped around the map as a kid, spending time in Lake Minnetonka, Minn., and Memphis before his family settled in suburban Chicago.

Moosman has been on the move again the past eight weeks, shifting from guard to center after David Molk missed time with a foot injury. He moved back to his original spot to start last Saturday's game against Penn State only to be thrust back to center when Molk tore his right anterior cruciate ligament.

David Moosman joked it was nice while it lasted. His shift back from center to guard lasted less than a quarter.

Then the guard-turned-center-turned-guard again watched as starting center David Molk, who had missed the past four games with a foot injury, crumpled to the ground with a torn right ACL.

Molk’s season is done. He'll miss spring practice, too. And Michigan’s offensive output became more fragile with the tear of a tendon.

Molk suffered the injury on the opening series of Saturday’s 35-10 loss to Penn State, when his knee gave out without contact.

Rodriguez said Molk will undergo surgery once the swelling in his leg goes down and will miss spring practice. He should be back by summer.

“He just kind of planted funny on one of the run plays, and there it went,” Rodriguez said. “It’s a loss, but we’ll put David Moosman back at center like we did in that ballgame and move forward.”

Meandering through the maize (and blue): Forcier's shoulder worse than previously thought

A few weeks ago, landing on it hard multiple times, Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier bruised his right shoulder.

Now, according to a report in the Michigan Daily, it might be worse than previously reported. Forcier's brother, Jason, told the Daily it is an AC joint sprain and "his shoulder is more injured than I think the public realizes."

Forcier also suffered a concussion Saturday against Iowa and was pulled from the final two series of Michigan's 30-28 loss to the Hawkeyes due to a coach's decision. As you contemplate that, check out the rest of today's links:

David Moosman will start at center and more Wednesday practice notes from Michigan football

David Moosman is back practicing after missing last week's win over Eastern Michigan with a shoulder injury, and Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez said he'll start at center in Saturday's Big Ten opener.

“He had a good practice" Tuesday, Rodriguez said. "He’ll be ready to go."

For the last 15 games, center David Molk has been Michigan’s most consistent offensive lineman. For the next four to six weeks, he’ll be out of action.

Molk broke a bone in his foot in Saturday’s 45-17 win over Eastern Michigan and will be out at least month, coach Rich Rodriguez announced Monday.

The injury occurred in the first half Saturday, but Molk played through the pain and was one of Michigan’s Offensive Players of the Game. He was scheduled to undergo surgery Monday.
