Associated press: Michigan signee Derrick Walton is Class B player of the year; Gabriel Richard's Jason Houle honorable mention

The Associated Press Class B All-State team was released on Thursday and Michigan signee Derrick Walton Jr. of Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy is the Player of the Year.

Father Gabriel Richard junior Jason Houle earned honorable mention, given to any player to receive one or fewer votes among the 10-person panel.

Derrick Walton remains top Michigan basketball '13 pledge in Scout rankings; Zak Irvin makes a jump

Derrick Walton continues to be perceived as the crown jewel of the Michigan basketball team's 2013 recruiting class.

But current pledge classmate Zak Irvin appears to finally be hot on his heels.

National recruiting site Scout.com updated its 2013 rankings Tuesday, and Walton -- a four-star point guard from Chandler Park Academy -- came in at No. 43 overall, the eighth-best lead guard in the class.

Irvin, meanwhile, made his debut in Scout's rankings -- coming in at No. 62.

ESPN.com released its Top 100 prospects for the 2013 class Thursday, and the Michigan basketball program placed three commits on the list -- more than any other school in America.

Michigan basketball commit Derrick Walton is on the rise, according to one national recruiting site.

Fellow 2013 pledge Zak Irvin, however, is not.

Walton, a 6-foot, 175-pound point guard from Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy, was rated as the 48th-best player in Scout.com's most recent Top 100 for 2013 ranking. The four-star point guard is listed as the 10th-best lead guard in the class.

The Michigan basketball team's 2012 recruiting class already is ranked among the top 10 in the country, and it recently added another guard in Spike Albrecht.

Rivals.com released its updated class rankings for 2013, and three of the Wolverines' four verbals rank inside the Top 150.

Michigan basketball commit Derrick Walton Jr. to play for United States team in German event

Future Michigan basketball point guard Derrick Walton Jr. is headed overseas to represent his country.

Walton, a 2013 Wolverine recruit, will play in the 2012 Albert Schweitzer Tournament in Mannheim, Germany next month.

Walton's father, Derrick Sr., confirmed the news to AnnArbor.com.
