Michigan's Desmond Morgan has gone from overwhelmed to experienced in one short season

A Holland native, Morgan spent plenty of time as a youth in the stands cheering on the Michigan football team, and watched even more action at home on television -- all the while wondering what it would feel like to stand on the field wearing the winged helmet.

And then, as a freshman in 2011, Morgan's dreams became a reality when he made his Michigan debut at home against Notre Dame under the lights.

His emotions that day? Joy? Jubilation? Excitement?

Try terror.

It took one series Saturday for the injury bug to strike the Michigan football team.

Sophomore linebacker Desmond Morgan limped off the field following the first possession of the club's controlled scrimmage portion of the annual spring game at Michigan Stadium.

Morgan spent the remainder of the afternoon on the bench, with his right leg propped up.

"He got hit," Michigan coach Brady Hoke said, declining to go into further detail of the injury.

ESPN.com Big Ten bloggers Adam Rittenberg and Brian Bennett unveiled their 2011 Big Ten All-Freshman team Tuesday, a squad including four Michigan football players.

Cornerback Blake Countess, linebacker Jake Ryan, linebacker Desmond Morgan and kicker Matt Wile were all on the list.

Oh, those kids.

Michigan football coach Brady Hoke talked at length this week on how he expected to find more playing time for a handful of freshmen.

He was true to his word.

But that doesn't mean Hoke necessarily likes it.

"I'm going to kill one of them," Hoke said with a smirk, declining to explain which player he was referring to. "Read it in the obituaries."

One month after the Michigan football team wrapped up a season in which it allowed an average of 35 points and 450 yards per game, new coach Brady Hoke concentrated on defense while recruiting.

Twelve of the 20 recruits Michigan landed Wednesday on national signing day play defense. The next step: Changing how the Wolverines look on defense by moving from the 3-3-5 favored by former coach Rich Rodriguez and going to the 4-3 scheme.
