"No matter how many times rookie cornerback-turned-safety Donovan Warren has had a query about the Jets' intricate defense, Jim Leonhard has always helped," writes Manish Mehta in the New York Daily News.

The fifth-year Jets starter and Warren, in his first year out of Michigan, have a connection. Neither were selected in the NFL Draft.

Donovan Warren had no intention of running for NFL scouts at Michigan’s pro day, but his competitive nature got the best of him.

Still bothered by a right ankle injury that caused him to pull out of the NFL combine last month, Warren borrowed a pair of teammate Stevie Brown’s cleats Friday and said he clocked two 40-yard dashes in the mid-4.5 range.

Warren ran a disappointing 40 at the combine after spraining the same ankle he originally hurt as a sophomore during a February workout.

But Warren, who led the Wolverines with four interceptions last year, said he’s comfortable with his decision to turn pro and focused on getting ready for next week’s NFL combine.

“I feel like I’m right up there talent wise with any cornerback that’s coming out,” Warren said Wednesday during a break from workouts at the Performance Gaines training facility in Westlake Village, Calif. “Just cause those guys had people around them and things went well for their team, my (play) at the combine and my ability, my interviews will speak for itself.

ESPN analyst Mel Kiper ranks Michigan football draft prospects

Defensive end Brandon Graham is the only Michigan football player to crack ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft.

NEW YORK (AP) — The expected heavy influx of non-seniors applying for this year's NFL draft did not happen despite looming labor unrest in the league.

Although a record-tying 53 players, including Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren, declared for early entry, that number released Tuesday by the NFL was short of most projections.

"I think that the colleges have really done a good job of telling these young men how it is to their advantage to stay in school," said NFL draft consultant Gil Brandt, who helped build the Dallas Cowboys in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. "I thought there would be more and I was surprised."

ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said in a conference call Monday that Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren could be a second-round pick in April's NFL Draft, though he would have been better served returning to school.

“I wasn't surprised," McShay said of Warren's decision. "I had heard he was leaning in that direction. I guess I was a little bit disappointed. I just think that he hasn’t quite reached his potential yet."

Analysts say subpar talent is the root of Michigan's defensive problems

Several analysts who’ve followed the team this year say a glaring lack of talent, not scheme or coaching, is the reason the Wolverines rank last in the Big Ten in scoring and total defense in conference games.
