Former U-M basketball captain founds clothing line with an eye toward community service

He didn’t give up when he didn’t make the University of Michigan basketball team the first two times he tried out. He didn’t give up when, as captain of the team, the Wolverines broke a 12-year tournament drought.

Reversing the trend of underprivileged and underserved students dropping out of high schools across America is a daunting task, but Merritt is going to give it his all. And he’s not going to give up.

Jalen Rose won't have to worry about anyone dubbing the United States' women's gymnastics team the "Fab Five" any longer.

Jalen Rose has no issue with the United States' women's gymnastics Olympic team.

He does, however, have a bit of a problem with the media handing them a very familiar nickname.

In an interview with 97.1 FM's Jamie Samuelsen, the former Michigan basketball star says he's not a fan of the gold-medal winning squad being known as the "Fab Five."

"To use the nickname 'Fab Five' just points and screams of lazy journalism by the national media," Rose said. "That's really what it is. It's no fault at all of the young gymnasts, but I wish they would have been able to come up with (an even more) creative tag for them in their goal medal pursuit, because they have been terrific."

Jalen Rose's hard feelings toward his alma mater, its president and his beloved Final Four banners may be subsiding.

During an interview with WJR's Frank Beckmann on Wednesday, the former Michigan basketball star said he's not turning his back on the school he once played for -- and he's hopeful the Fab Five will be fully embraced in Ann Arbor once again.

"I really like Mary Sue Coleman, the president of Michigan, I love (athletic director) Dave Brandon, I still support the university," Rose said. "Dave Brandon feels that there is a way to still honor what our teams brought to the table, and it's up to him to decide how he's going to do it. That's out of my control.

"I do think the University of Michigan is going to do the right thing in 2013 and find a way to honor what we helped bring to the table."

Ex-Michigan basketball star Jalen Rose to join ESPN's hoops version of 'College GameDay'

Jalen Rose's career as a basketball analyst is about to take a leap forward.

ESPN announced Monday that the former Michigan basketball star will become part of the network's hoops version of "College GameDay" next season.

Rose will replace former analyst Hubert Davis, and will join the already formed crew of Rece Davis, Digger Phelps and Jay Bilas for the program next season.

Jalen Rose not happy with Mary Sue Coleman's recent Fab Five banner stance

Mary Sue Coleman has no immediate intentions of re-raising Michigan basketball's removed banners.

And Jalen Rose isn't exactly thrilled about it.

The former Michigan basketball star took to Twitter on Thursday in response to the University of Michigan president's comments in a recent Michigan Daily article about the four banners exiled from the Crisler Center, two of which are the 1992 and 1993 Final Four banners.

"I saw that U of Michigan has no plans to put back up our hoops banners," Rose tweeted. "Should I do like most of its former BBallers & never return?"

Detroit Free Press: Former Michigan Fab Five member Jalen Rose starts jail sentence

Jalen Rose, the former Michigan guard and a key member of the Fab Five era in Michigan basketball, started his 20-day sentence in Oakland County jail for drunk driving, The Detroit Free Press reported.

Rose, now an analyst for ESPN, was arrested in West Bloomfield in March after he crashed his vehicle and his blood-alcohol tested at 0.12, above Michigan's legal driving limit of 0.08 percent.

Former Michigan basketball guard Manny Harris is not a golfer.

That much was obvious when it took Harris not one, not two, but three attempts to connect with his first tee shot at Barton Hills Country Club on Monday.

Harris, fresh off of his rookie season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, obviously wasn’t at the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy Golf Outing to impress anyone with his backswing.

A product of the Detroit Public School system, Harris was there to support Rose’s efforts to better the education of the city’s youth.

“I think it’s big that Jalen is doing what he’s doing,” said Harris, a 2007 graduate of Redford High School, who was born and raised in Detroit.

“If you can come back and give back, especially if it’s a school and the state of Michigan as a whole, I think it’s big to do that.”

Jalen Rose said he is trying to “break the mold” of what is expected from a public school — particularly a Detroit public school.

He got a good start Monday, when the first fundraiser for the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy -- his tuition-free charter school set to open in September on Detroit’s Northwest Side -- raised $75,000 during a celebrity-laden golf outing at Barton Hills Country Club.

Jalen Rose doesn't golf, but he's luring some big-name celebrities to Barton Hills for his fundraiser

In 38 years on this Earth, Jalen Rose has played two rounds of golf. He’ll play his third Monday at Barton Hills Country Club in Ann Arbor.

While the former Michigan and NBA point guard describes his game bluntly as “terrible,” a stroke count isn’t the number he’s focused on at the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy Golf Outing.

“I don’t play at all. It’s not for me to go and put up some marker that’s going to make Tiger Woods jealous,” Rose said. “I’m just going to try to fundraise and do what I can to give back.

“I won’t be surprised if I have the highest score out there.”

Former Michigan basketball player Jalen Rose pleaded guilty to drunken driving in an Oakland County court today, according to The Associated Press reports.

Rose, who admitted he had six martinis before his March 11 arrest, faces up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.

ESPN pulls analyst Jalen Rose off air for failing to report arrest

ESPN has pulled Jalen Rose off the air for failing to report he was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

The USA Today reported Friday that it took Rose, a former Michigan basketball player working as an analyst for ESPN, nearly three weeks to inform his employer of the arrest.

Jalen Rose is back in the news, but it isn't for his controversial remarks in the "Fab Five" documentary he produced, which aired on ESPN earlier this month. The Associated Press reported on Tuesday night that Rose was arrested on around on March 11 after being accused of operating a vehicle while impaired in West Bloomfield Township.

Police said Rose's Cadillac Escalade slid off an icy road around 2 a.m. and a passer-by called police. Rose refused a Breathalyzer at the scene and was taken to the hospital for a blood-alcohol test. The results of the test have not been reported.

The Fab Five influence is found all across the Big Ten and college basketball

INDIANAPOLIS — The influence is everywhere at the Big Ten tournament. Every team here has baggy shorts. Michigan and Northwestern both wore black socks and black sneakers.

To understand how much the Michigan Fab Five has effected the game of basketball, all you need to do is look around. Never mind none of the players in Indianapolis are old enough to remember watching Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King and Juwan Howard play in back-to-back national title games.

They all know who they are.
