New U-M women's basketball coach to lead Ann Arbor July 4th parade

Leading it all will be new University of Michigan women's basketball Coach Kim Barnes Arico, the parade grand marshal.

It's the 22nd year the Ann Arbor Jaycees have hosted the parade, and this year's theme is "We the People."

When Kim Barnes Arico was announced as the new Michigan women’s basketball coach earlier this spring, the first order of business she outlined was pretty simple.

Maintain and advance.

The Wolverines were an NCAA Tournament team last season and return several core players from that group, meaning -- in that area, anyway -- things aren’t broke, so they don’t need to be fixed.

The second goal, however, might be a bit trickier. Barnes Arico wants to build on Michigan’s recent on-court success, but she also wants people in the stands to see it happen.

“One of my biggest priorities right now is to meet as many people as I can, and to get people excited about our women’s basketball program,” Barnes Arico told AnnArbor.com recently. “I want this to be something that the people in Ann Arbor, and the people in Michigan, want to be a part of.”

Personally, the past few weeks have been rather hectic for new Michigan women's basketball coach Kim Barnes Arico.

Her office inside the William Davidson Player Development Center is filled with unpacked boxes and she's still in the process of moving her family to Ann Arbor, something that will have to wait until her young children finish the school year in New York.

Professionally, however, the beginning of Barnes Arico's tenure with the Wolverines has been extremely smooth.

Within minutes, Kim Barnes Arico had the Michigan fan base eating from the palm of her hands.

Formally introduced as the new women's basketball head coach Monday at Michigan Stadium, Barnes Arico talked about pushing for league championships, turning the tide against Michigan State and turning the program into "something special."

And then, she really won Wolverine fans over.

"I don't want to steal from somebody else," Barnes Arico said with a smile. "But, it's the University of Michigan.

"For God sakes."

The Michigan women's basketball program has its new leader.

Former St. John's coach Kim Barnes Arico, the 2012 Big East Coach of the Year, was named the program's ninth head coach Friday, according to an official university release.
