Sheriff's office increases presence at Ypsilanti, Willow Run high schools

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has increased its presence at Ypsilanti and Willow Run high schools ahead of Friday, the final day of school before the two districts officially consolidate this summer.

Sgt. Geoffrey Fox said the department has had two to four officers at each school since Wednesday to prevent any issues.

"At the end of the school year, the kids are a little restless," Fox said. "Some things have happened in the past on the last days of school because the kids don't have to worry about being suspended."

As the 163 graduates of Ypsilanti High School, dressed head to toe in purple, marched across the stage to receive their diplomas on Tuesday night they signified the beginning of a new chapter in their own lives and a new chapter for the district.

Steve Brooks has been hired as Ypsilanti Community Schools' varsity basketball coach, the district announced Tuesday.

Ypsilanti High School will hold its 2013 graduation ceremonies Tuesday, June 4, 7 p.m. at the EMU Convocation Center. The class includes approximately 158 graduates.

Ypsilanti and Willow Run teachers to be notified of job status Friday

Ypsilanti Public Schools and Willow Run Community Schools teachers will be notified Friday whether they will be offered positions in the consolidated district, Washtenaw Intermediate School District Superintendent Scott Menzel confirmed.

"It's very difficult," Menzel said. "It's emotionally draining for everyone involved. It's a product of having to make some very difficult decisions in order to address financial issues within both districts.

Boy Scout refurbishing bicycles to distribute to needy kids

His idea was to refurbish children's bicycles, then give them out to kids who need a bike. So far, he's collected 38 bicycles all by donation.

Ypsilanti Community Schools will don uniforms in black and Vegas gold next school year, however the mascot that will embody those colors will be chosen by a student vote.
