Using nine entry overhead banners featuring photos of stars like Karen Black, Shelley Duvall, Henry Gibson, Elliott Gould, and Michael Murphy — as well as placards, personal correspondence, and oversized panels strategically placed throughout the Graduate Library’s Exhibition Room — the exhibit looks like just about the right size for Altman.
Mary Morris, U-M Hatcher public information specialist, succinctly says in the display’s press release, “This exhibit draws on the riches of the University of Michigan’s Robert Altman archive, including examples of his novel approach to overlapping dialogue, his exploration of movie genres, his use of ensemble casts, and how audiences and critics viewed his work. It includes materials from “M*A*S*H” (1970), “Gosford Park” (2001), “Nashville” (1975) and more (as) researched by students from the U-M Department of Screen Arts & Cultures.”

With three winners in each category (alternative, animation, documentary, narrative, foreign film), the competition culminates with all the winners convening for a week of industry activities in Los Angeles and an awards ceremony (hosted by Bob Saget) on Saturday, June 8, when each filmmaker will learn whether he/she has earned a gold, silver, or bronze medal in his/her category.
Janes, who grew up in different parts of metro Detroit (most recently Royal Oak), based “Zug” on a short story he’d written about two young men who are dared by classmates to visit mysterious Zug Island.

Lynne Avadenka's works in the Institute for the Humanities Gallery.
Featuring an expansive 6-artwork display, this winter’s Jill S. Harris Visiting Fellow of the Humanities Institute has her work distributed liberally around the Institute gallery. Encompassing books, wall-mounted prints, and a particularly interesting glasswork, the display’s signature feature is a restless foray into process.
As Peggy Daub, curator and outreach librarian of the U-M Special Collections Library, relates in an interview she conducted with Avadenka for the exhibit, this Huntington Park, Mich. mixed-media artist seeks to create art “that contains both the beauty of gesture” as well as “a core of meaning.”
