Ann Arbor Academy is having an Open House and Information Night for Prospective Families on Tuesday evening, October 16, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Professionals in the field of learning differences, ADHD, ASD, and other related disciplines are also encouraged to stop by and learn more about the Academy and what it has to offer students who are not succeeding in a traditional school environment.
Ann Arbor Academy is a private, independent school specifically designed to meet the needs of students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder, as well as other learning differences that may cause them to struggle in a large, more traditional classroom environment. We were formed in 1997 by parents whose students were not working up to their potential in public or other private schools, and who felt that there had to be a better way to reach these students and unlock their gifts. Since 2001, we have graduated over one hundred students, 85% of whom have gone on to college, and the rest of whom entered the workforce, usually through a job training program.
We focus on identifying student strengths and building on that foundation, while simultaneously identifying and remediating student weaknesses. We use multisensory teaching techniques and differentiated instruction and assessment to get to the heart of how a student learns and how to best support their growth and development, both socially and academically. Students feel safe and understood, and a comprehensive social support program helps to ensure that this is the case. Teachers at the Academy are extensively trained in curriculum delivery, learning support, and social feedback, giving students structure and safety as they go about the task of learning how to learn. Our curriculum is college preparatory, and focuses on the development and strengthening of executive functioning skills along with social development. We find that this is the most powerful approach to getting a student ready for college as well as the workforce. Our students learn how they learn, and how to express that to others in order to self advocate in school and a work environment. We are enrolling students in grades 4 - 12, as well as our college bridge program, the Thirteenth Year. Our admissions are done on a rolling basis, and we have room in our school at this time for more students. We are having our Open House in order to let area families and professionals know that there is an alternative out there. Students who enroll at the Academy often stay to graduate, but just as often move back to a larger school environment after one or two years, and are generally quite successful, having gained the crucial academic and social skills they needed to reach their potential. On the evening of Tuesday the 16th, we will be giving tours of the school from 6:30 - 7:30, then there will be a presentation about Ann Arbor Academy's educational philosophy and approach from 7:30 - 8:00. Questions and social time will follow. We are located at 111 East Mosley St., Ann Arbor, 48104. When you turn onto East Mosley off of Main Street (we are just south of downtown Ann Arbor), look for the green awning on your left, and you will have found us. If you have any questions, please call us at 734-747-6641, send us an email, or visit our website at www.annarboracademy.org. Hope to see you there!
