95 Years Ago: August, 1917:
A list of proposed changes in street names is considered by Ann Arbor City Council to avoid confusion as reported in the Ann Arbor Daily Times News:
`12th street south of the campus be known as Haven Street;
`12th street north of the campus be known as Watson avenue;
`West street from South Main street be known as Pauline Boulevard;
`Chapin street running north from West Huron street be called Third street; it be a continuance of Third street;
`Fifth avenue be known as Allen avenue;
`Fourth avenue north of Hill street be known as Rumsey avenue;
`Fourth avenue south of Hill street be known as Greene street."
But wait: "Alderman Markey wanted to know what bunch of 'nuts' contrived these changes?"
Editor's note: the confusion of Fourth Avenue and Fourth Street; Fifth Avenue and Fifth Strreet remain;and why is Georgetown Boulevard not in the Georgetown subdivision?
In the immortal words of Ed Shaffran: "Ann Arbor: 27-square-miles surrounded by reality."
