The Michigan Philharmonic Features
Award Winners for Upcoming Performance

The Michigan Philharmonic presents,
“Dance Mix” – An eclectic array of vivacious dance music from ballet
to folk to Broadway and back.  The concert features two award winning
artists – Zachary
Shemon on Saxophone and Grammy Award winning Composer, Libby Larsen.  Shemon, a hometown favorite, is currently a
member of the Prism Quartet based out of New York and was just recently awarded
First Place in the ISSAC International Saxophone Competition.  Shemon will be the guest soloist on “Song
Concerto” written by Libby Larsen who will attend for the Midwest premier of
her work.

Other pieces in this fun and interesting concert will be Reinhold
Gliere, Russian Sailor's Dance (1927)

Manuel de Falla, Ritual Fire Dance from “El Amor Brujo” (1915), Igor Stravinsky, Pulcinella Suite (1920/1949)
and Richard Rodgers, Slaughter on 10th Avenue from “On Your Toes” (1936).



Zachary Shemon (alto saxophone) is a member of the Prism
Quartet and has been recognized nationally as both a soloist and chamber
musician. He made his orchestral debut at the age of eighteen, performing
Jacques Ibert’s Concertino da Camera with the Plymouth, MI symphony. As a
soloist, Zach has been extremely successful in competition, recently winning
First Prize in the ISSAC – International Saxophone Competition.  He was a two-time concerto competition
finalist at the University of Michigan and has performed concertos by Michael
Colgrass and William Bolcom with the UM Bands. He has also been a featured
soloist on multiple occasions with the Michigan Philharmonic and the Ann Arbor
Concert Band. In addition to his appearances as a soloist, Zach has performed
with the Windsor, ON symphony and was featured with the University of Michigan
Symphony Band at Carnegie Hall in 2005. As a chamber musician, he was prize
winner in the 2005 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition and
performed William Bolcom’s Concerto
Grosso
with his former quartet, Twelve-Ten. He holds degrees from
the University of Michigan in both Saxophone Performance and Engineering.

 

Grammy award winning composer, Libby Larsen is one of America’s most
performed living composers. She has created a catalogue of over 500 works
spanning virtually every genre from intimate vocal and chamber music to massive
orchestral works and over 15 operas. 
Grammy award-winning and widely recorded, including over 50 CD’s of her
work, she is constantly sought after for commissions and premieres by major
artists, ensembles, and orchestras around the world.
