Synopsis:

16-year-old Berdie is no stranger to lying, stealing, and sex. Her other-side-of-the-tracks charm gets men twice her age into bed and, secretly, the cash out of their pockets. Before her victims know it, she’s gone off into the night, never to be seen again. But when Phillip, a recently divorced, laid-off high school teacher, takes special interest in Berdie after a night of wrought seduction, Berdie is forced to confront more realities than just the promiscuity of her young life. Somewhere off the freeway in the desolate Midwest, a truck stop diner sits—inside of it, a play which delves into the emotional imprisonment of characters fighting for a getaway.

Characters

Berdie – (16 years old, Female) – The 16 year old protagonist of the show is stubborn and rebellious but also a highly intelligent and sensitive teenager. She is often despised by the hypocrisy of the adult world and uses cynicism and sarcasm to protect herself from pain and disappointment.

Nora – (Late 20s, Female) – Birdie’s compassionate and loving co-worker at the truck stop diner who often acts as both a maternal figure and confidant to the troubled teen. She wants to help Birdie but is usually unsure of how to do just that.

Sandra – (Late 30s/Early 40s, Female) – Phillip’s wife who struggles to forgive her husband for his childish behavior and to repair their own dysfunctional family.

Charlie – (Late 20s, Male) – Nora’s goofy and sweet longtime boyfriend who also works at the truck stop diner. He is frustrated with Birdie’s reckless behavior but understands that she is a part of life at the diner.

Phillip – (Late 30s/early 40s, Male) – The emotionally broken, former high school teacher attempts to create a bond with Birdie, romantically or otherwise, but struggles with his own hypocrisy and is just as uncomfortable with his weaknesses like the troubled 16 year old.

Ernie – (50s, Male) – Birdie’s tired and estranged father who only briefly appears but serves as a reminder to Birdie of the disappointment that comes with adulthood.
