The Ann Arbor based political militant group the LUWM, Leather Underwearmen, held a vigil for the late George McGovern Thursday evening on the Diag in the heart of the University of Michigan campus. The liberal McGovern is best remembered for his presidential campaign run in 1972 against incumbent Richard Nixon. McGovern’s campaign ran on a promise of peace and an end to the war in Vietnam.
One hundred and fifty vigil participants holding candles
chanted McGovern’s famous quote,” I’m fed up to the ears with old people dreaming up wars for young people to die in.” The chant was repeated continuously for forty-five minutes. Passersby, most of them too young to remember McGovern’s peace campaign seemed bemused and inspired by the vigil. Dan Handy of Bellville said, “I’ve never heard of McGovern but sounds like a cool dude.”
