Short will travel more than 700 miles to promote OPERATION NICE

Sioux City, IA, and Ypsilanti, MI, April 27, 2011 –Michigan author, Kristy Short, Ed.D today announced that she will embark on a cross-country trip to help a child from reported bullying and implement her OPERATION NICE anti-bullying program in the school.

Short recently launched her new book for young readers, Zanda Humphrey’s OPERATION NICE, which advocates the importance of kindness and positive behavior. Supporting the book’s theme, Short also launched her Operation Nice anti-bullying campaign within several Michigan elementary schools. A fifth-grade student at Sioux City’s Smith Elementary School found Short’s website and read about what she was doing for kids. The child contacted Short, asking for her help to fight bullying and spread the word about Operation Nice in his school.

“As soon as I read his email, I knew that I would make the trip to Iowa,” Short recalled. “With the help of his mom, this young student searched the internet to find someone that might be able to help prevent bullying in his school. I’m so glad it was me that he found.”

Short will travel to Smith Elementary School in Sioux City, Iowa on May 5–6, 2011. She planned the event with the help of the school’s principal.

“Ms. Short called me about making a visit to our school,” said Smith Elementary School principal, Mette Malek. “She explained her Operation Nice program to me and volunteered to visit and present her book and program. I think what she doing is wonderful; and the message of Operation Nice is just what the kids need to hear. It will be a powerful extension of Smith’s current anti-bullying initiatives. I believe she will make a big difference.”

Short’s vision is that Operation Nice will go viral as she continues to introduce the book and program to students. To date, her Operation Nice tour includes numerous schools in southeastern Michigan, Iowa, and California.

About Kristy Short & the Zanda Humphrey Series

Kristy Short, Ed.D, has been writing stories for kids since she was a kid herself—creating her first book when she was in the 3rd grade. Also the author of The Dirt Bottom Holler Club, a young adult chapter book, she has a clear passion for writing creative stories about magical inventions and exciting adventures. At the heart of all her stories is a love and necessity for active, perpetual imagination.

The Zanda Humphrey series for young readers was created for Short’s elementary school-aged nephew. In 2010, she was asked to participate in her nephew’s school’s “Mystery Reader” program, and when she wasn’t able to identify a book she wanted to read, she wrote her own. Her first book, Zanda Humphrey’s Big Sweet Invention, showcases Zanda’s Cake-o-matic, a magic cupcake-making machine. Short even demonstrated the invention to students, complete with bubbling potions, rolling smoke, and of course, cupcakes. Described by students as “the best mystery reader ever,” Short was asked to return in 2011. For the event, she wrote OPERATION NICE.
