ANN ARBOR – The Michigan Eye-Bank is pleased to announce that volunteer Ambassador Larry Alman was honored on July 23 as a finalist for a 2012 Governor’s Service Award during a celebration at Detroit’s Gem Theater. Alman, who lives in Greenville, was nominated in the “Senior Volunteer of the Year” category.
He has been volunteering as an Ambassador for the Eye-Bank since 2008, when he received a letter in the mail regarding volunteer opportunities.
“I didn’t even read the whole thing, I just found a number at the bottom of the page and called to sign up,” Alman recalls.
During the last four years, he has worked to promote the Michigan Organ Donor Registry on behalf of the Eye-Bank, and helped to educate hundreds of people about the importance of eye, organ and tissue donation.
As a cornea recipient, it is a cause that is close to Alman’s heart. While he is legally blind, without the tissue given by generous eye donors, he would be completely without sight.
“Larry is phenomenal,” says Alison Wright, the Eye‐Bank’s Community Engagement Manager. “He has the ability to find an opportunity to promote the registry with every person he meets.”
It was Wright who nominated Alman for the Governor’s Service Award, which is given annually to acknowledge the contributions made by Michigan volunteers in eight different categories. Each category had five finalists, selected by a statewide peer review panel representing nonprofit organizations, schools and businesses, from a pool of more than 130 nominees.
The Michigan Eye-Bank is a charitable, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and restoration of sight. It recovers, evaluates and distributes human eye tissue for transplantation. It also supports research into the causes and cures of blinding eye conditions, promotes donation awareness through public and professional education, and provides humanitarian aid to people in need of corneal transplantation throughout the world.
