Registration is currently underway for Redbud Productions’ fourteenth season of their Winter Acting Class for Adult & High School Actors, taught by local teacher, director and actress Loretta Grimes. Using the techniques of acclaimed acting teacher Sanford Meisner, sessions will focus on emotional work, improvisation and scene study.
Classes, held at 1101 Ravenwood in Ann Arbor, will occur on Saturdays from 3:00 to 5:30 pm. Classes begin on Saturday, January 12, will consist of 10 sessions and will end on March 23 (there will be no class on January 26). Tuition is $160 per semester.
Loretta Grimes trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York using methods devised by famed teacher Sanford Meisner. Using his technique, she encourages students to act moment-to-moment, recalling emotional images from their past to serve as a background for their character’s emotional state of mind.
Redbud Productions was voted best the 2011 Stage Performance Group in Ann Arbor by annarbor.com readers. Ms. Grimes has also won many area awards for her acting and directing work, including Current Magazine honors for best actress and best director in the Washtenaw County area.
She is well known to area audiences as the director of the Redbud Production’s stagings of The Miracle Worker, The Diary of Anne Frank, Picnic, Wait Until Dark, The Heiress, The Children’s Hour, Come Back Little Sheba, The Wake of Jamey Foster, I Never Sang For My Father, Broadway Bound, Harvey; One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and Proof; and for her performances in Redbud’s Marvin’s Room, The Shadow Box, Crimes of the Heart, The House of Blue Leaves, Wit, Dividing The Estate, Rabbit Hole and August: Osage County.
She has successfully taught Meisner technique classes for adults and teens for many years. Many of her students have gone on to featured roles for Redbud Productions, Performance Network Theatre, Purple Rose Theatre, Encore Musical Theatre, Ann Arbor Civic Theatre and other local companies as well as roles in several major motion pictures filmed in Michigan. Her high school students have gone on to advanced studies at Yale Drama School, Julliard, New York University, the University of Michigan, New York’s Circle in the Square, DePaul University and other Theatre programs.
