Molina Healthcare of Michigan recently recognized seven unsung heroes at is fourth annual Community Champions Awards, which was held at the Roostertail.  One of the winners was Rosemary, Sarri, Ph.D., a University of Michigan senior research professor emeritus from Ann Arbor.  Entertainment was provided by the Detroit School of Arts jazz band and female choir and an art gallery showcasing students’ work from the College of Creative Studies was displayed during the reception.

Rosemary Sarri, Ph.D., a leading expert in the areas of child/family welfare policy and juvenile/criminal justice systems, was recognized for her volunteer work with Alternatives for Girls (AFG).  AFG is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serve homeless and high-risk girls and young women by providing safe shelter, street outreach, educational support, vocational guidance, mentoring, prevention activities and counseling.  Dr. Sarri has worked with AFG for 23 years since its inception.  Over the years, she helped to develop programs, conduct research and secure funds.  She is currently the chair for the AFG Program Committee.

“Dr. Sarri is an internationally-recognized educator when it comes to social work,” said Jesse Thomas, president of Molina Healthcare of Michigan.  “However, what’s even more noteworthy than her credibility and experience is her longtime commitment to serve others using her exceptional knowledge.”

Established to honor the memory of Dr. Molina, our Community Champions program spotlights the good deeds of everyday heroes in their communities.  The 2010 winners were recognized in several categories: education; healthcare media; civic leader; faith-based organization; advocacy leader; support groups/service clubs and volunteer.  Each winner also received a $1000 grant to give to a deserving nonprofit organization as part of his/her award.   Dr. Sarri donated her grant to Alternatives for Girls.
