Advance screening of Drew Barrymore's "Whip It" happens Saturday

By Jenn McKee

In advance of the October 2 release of Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, "Whip It," the locally-shot feature film will have a screening on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Showcase Cinemas, 4100 Carpenter Road in Ypsilanti.

Based on Shauna Cross' young-adult novel "Derby Girl," the film tells the story of a small-town Texas teen who longs to escape her mother's pageant ambitions for her and join an Austin-based roller derby team. Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern, Kristen Wiig, Eve, Jimmy Fallon, Juliette Lewis, Barrymore, and Zoe Bell all appear in the film, which was filmed in Ypsilanti and the Detroit area last year.
