Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra family concert boasts beloved works, special guest
Lloyd Carr
The season's first entry in the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra's series of Benard L. Maas Foundation Family Concerts will combine two classic orchestral works aimed at both children and adults, plus a special guest narrator.
Former University of Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr will join the A2SO as a special attraction when the orchestra presents Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" and Benjamin Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra." The concert is set for 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Michigan Theater.
“This is a wonderful event for children of all ages," Carr said in a prepared statement. "I will not only be narrating these pieces, but bringing my grandchildren to enjoy this afternoon of great fun. Please join me in supporting the wonderful work of the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra. This will provide your family and friends a lifetime of memories.”
In "Peter and the Wolf," written in 1936, the characters —Â represented by different instruments — attempt to outsmart the wicked wolf, while avoiding Peter’s grumpy grandfather.
Britten's "Guide" arose from a commission for a piece to introduce orchestral instruments, using variations on a theme by Henry Purcell.
The concert will take place at 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty St. Family concert single tickets are $10; tickets to a three-concert series are $25. To order tickets call 734-994-4801; fax 734-994-3949; email a2so@a2so.com; or go online to www.a2so.com. First-time subscribers buy one season subscription and get one free.
The concert is sponsored by the Loraine F. and Melinese M. Reuter Charitable Trust.
