AnnArbor.com's free, outdoor Summer Concert Series this week hosts the band Maurice Stovall and Friends.

The band, which plays jazz and Motown, will perform a lunchtime concert at noon this Friday, July 8, on the patio at AnnArbor.com's community space, 301 E. Liberty St. (at Fifth Avenue).

Maurice Stovall and Friends is a five-piece band. Stovall is the founder of Stovall Entertainment, an upbeat educational music school on Packard Road for all ages that aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore and express themselves through music.

Stovall played and studied music at Washtenaw Community College under John E. Lawrence, a well-known local musician and leader of the WCC Performing Arts Department, who will be part of Stovall's band on Friday. At WCC Stovall learned guitar and formed a band called The Elements of Sound, although he's been playing other instruments (trumpet, drums and bass) starting in the fourth grade.

In addition to Lawrence on guitar, the band will feature Thornton Perkins on bass, Charles Smith Jr. on piano and Emmanuel on drums. Stovall said he hopes the concert will "encourage and intrigue others to want to play an instrument. We hope to let people know they can play just like we can," he said.

For more information, see Stovall's website.

AnnArbor'com's Summer Concert Series continues at noon each Friday throughout the summer. Check out our Summer Concert Series homepage for more information.

I got to know Mr.Stovall when I took several classes at WCC. He is a very inspirational teacher,I have no problem saying he was my favorite teacher of all time. I encourage anyone who wants to learn to play an instrument to check out his music school on Packard Rd,you won't be sorry. He is really a great man and very involved in the community. Moody

I worked with Maurice on the WCC faculty for six years. As anyone who has worked with or taken a class from Maurice knows, he knows how to generate enthusiasm, he is a patient teacher, and he has an infectious sense of humor. If you ever thought about learning a musical instrument, he is the one to make it an entertaining, rewarding, and productive experience. See for yourself!
