Last time on "The Biggest Loser" (3-minute recap):
As the newly-formed blue team said goodbye to Miggy, father and daughter O'Neal and Sunshine were reunited. But there was little time for celebration, as Alison gave the competitors a reality check. That is, "The Biggest Loser" experience takes the participants away from the day-to-day responsibilities (work, family, etc.) which, as 1 hopeful explained, made it difficult to prioritize exercise and eating right. The group learned that for the week they'd be taking on full-time jobs working at the Los Angeles Food Bank with Feeding America volunteers. To stay on top of their health regimen, they'd need to plan: bring sensible meals for the ride to/from work, and make time to exercise (this week, the gym is only open 6 a.m.-7 p.m.).
Team black, including Ann Arbor hopeful Andrea, work together to drag a semi truck in a race to win groceries.
Before that, though, a challenge. The teams competed to drag semi trucks containing puzzle pieces. One team member was reserved for assembling the puzzle pieces, which spelled out what was at stake: groceries for one year. Despite the blue team having the strength advantage, victory came down to piecing the puzzle. Blue prevailed, but thanks in particular to Sam stepping up to lead his team (also comprised of local contender Andrea, plus Ashley, Cheryl, Stephanie and Sherry), black left the challenge with a new-found sense of unity.
As the work week loomed, the hopefuls took advantage of gym time, and Sam gathered together his teammates to have a good ol' pep talk. It seemed to have done the trick, as team black rallied at the gym for a pre-job workout. At the food bank, the competitors called to thank donors, took inventory and distributed food. In addition to helping the participants learn how to balance work and diet/exercise, conversations with regular food bank employees and recipients showed that the job itself was food for the soul. But the underlying challenge remained, as some competitors arrived home from work low on energy and less-than inspired to work out — and in the case of unofficial team leader Sam, not preparing lunch found him resorting to vending machine fare.
At the weigh-in, team black lost 32 pounds (2.27%). Andrea contributed a 7-pound loss, a welcome surprise after feeling stuck at losing 5 pounds over each of the past few weeks. But team blue's loss of 50 pounds (2.71%) ensured its members another week in the competition.
With most of the original pairs of competitors on different teams and new friendships forming along with the new teams, this week's elimination proved the most difficult yet. As was the case with the elimination of Miggy, the teammates voted for the competitor who they thought had the best support system back home. This week, ebullient mom Cheryl received the most votes, leaving her son Daris (on team blue) to carry the torch.
