How long does it take to write a book?

In Virginia Newell's experience it takes 49 years, with a lot of help from the Washtenaw Literacy World in a Basket Auction, Edwards Brothers and her writing group.

Local resident Virginia Newell is so happy she has completed and published the book about her life she began planning in 1961. Now a resident in Lurie Terrace, Virginia gives credit to other members of her writing group at Lurie Terrace for encouragement. But the main impetus came this time last year, when Virginia attended the Washtenaw Literacy World in a Basket Fundraising Auction and was the successful bidder for a basket that included getting your own book printed and published by Edwards Brothers. As she says in the book “...this book is being written for me. I will be overjoyed if, in addition, it finds readers among my family, friends, and even others I don't know personally.” With anecdotes, poems, recipes and some history, I suspect there could be many others who will take inspiration from Virginia, and try their hands at writing.

This year’s auction takes place at the Morris Lawrence Building on Friday, October 1. A basket similar to the one Virginia bid on is available again - one of many great auction items. You could be this year’s winner and publish your own book. Just come to the auction, bid early and often.
