Local book illustrator wins Caldecott award

By Nicola Rooney

Congratulations are in order for Erin Stead, who wins this year's Caldecott award for her illustrations in the book "A Sick Day for Amos McGee" written by her husband Phillip and published by Roaring Brook Press.

The Caldecott award is one of the most prestigious awards in children's literature, and award winners are assured a place in the libraries of towns and schools across the country.

The staff at Nicola's Books were captivated by the story and the illustrations as soon as the book came out, and we have introduced Mr. McGee to many young listeners and their parents and grandparents. The illustration style is delicate and delightful, with subtle small details in each picture, guaranteed amuse both the reader and the listener.

Erin and Phillip Stead live in Ann Arbor, and this was their first joint book project, but happily, they have several more in the pipeline.

Congratulations Erin! Wonderful award... I will have to order a book based just on the cover illustration!
