'Crazy Sexy Cancer' author to present 'From Illness to Activist' at Ann Arbor District Library Aug. 16

By Julia Eussen

Kris Carr is an actress, photographer and filmmaker. She is also a self-proclaimed "wellness warrior."

She was diagnosed in 2003 with a rare liver cancer that is considered incurable. After visiting several medical specialists, Carr chose to receive her treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. She also decided to exert control over that which she has control: her attitude, her diet and her lifestyle. She has chronicled her journey with cancer in the 2007 documentary, Crazy Sexy Cancer.

Carr will present "From Illness to Activist" on Aug. 16 at the Ann Arbor District Library. This presentation will be at the downtown main branch from 6:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.

She will discuss her journey and show clips from her documentary. She has also written two books, "Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips" and "Crazy Sexy Cancer Survivor: More Rebellion and Fire for Your Healing Journey," which will be available after the presentation.

As an advocate for living your best life with cancer, her goal is to focus her messages on health and wellness, and motivating audiences to become empowered participants for change.

In addition to her presentation, two medical professionals from the University of Michigan will join for a panel discussion focusing on the nutritional and psychological aspects of living life with cancer: Zora Djuric, a research professor at the University of Michigan Department of Family Medicine and Laurel Northous, who is co-director of the Socio-Behavior Program at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

This event is made possible through a Partners In Research Program with the National Institute of Health and is co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Taubman Health Science Libraries, The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) and the Ann Arbor YMCA.

Information about the event on the Ann Arbor District Library website can be found here.
