Bring your kids to Nicola’s Books this week to meet authors Shutta Crum and Amy Brecount White
This is a great week for kids at Nicola’s Books.
First Shutta Crum will be visiting us at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the launch of her new chapter book for young readers, ‘Thomas and the Dragon Queen.” A kingdom is at war, a princess has been kidnapped by a dragon queen and Thomas, a young, chivalrous squire volunteers to set her free. What makes Thomas so interesting is that he is not your run-of-the-mill fairy tale character. Instead, Thomas is 12 years old, but is half the size of other boys his age with little more than a donkey, a vest and a sword to take on his quest. Part adventure, part fantasy and what ensues is a delightful journey that is illustrated with some charming black and white drawings.
Then on Thursday, young adult author Amy Brecount White will join us at 7 p.m. for a discussion and signing of her first novel, ‘Forget-Her-Nots.’ If your daughter is past the princess stage, but not quite ready for that sparkly vampire then this could be the summer read for her. At boarding school 14-year-old Laurel realizes that she has powers that come from flowers, specifically the bouquets that she makes and gives to people - a spinster teacher finds love and marries; a fellow student glides through a test; and another student suddenly becomes irresistible to the boys. Lauren doesn’t understand what is happening, but soon finds out from a professor that she is a descendant of an ancient group known as “flowerspeakers.” Even though Lauren is advised not to meddle in other people’s lives she does not heed the advice with all her actions culminating at the prom.
