Can't make it to the NASCAR race? Ride horses instead

By Ann Dwyer

There's going to be a whole lot of horsepower at the Waterloo Recreation Area this Saturday. Literally, horse power. In celebration of the NASCAR event down the rode, the WRA will be offering NASCAR at Waterloo.

Ride on horses painted with favorite driver numbers and checkerboard butts. That's right, checkerboard butts. Be a part of the pit crew. Ride on a nature's racetrack. But if it worries you, yes, the race will be on the radio for all to hear. You won't miss a thing. Unless you're one of those people who simply must see a car crash live.

Saturday, June 15, 2013. All day. $35. 17030 Bush Road, Chelsea. 734-475-3170.

Why would anyone from A2 want to drive West on I-94 on a race weekend? It is a parking lot before and after the race?

...but not during.

@Brad, you obviously haven't ridden the horse ride at Jenny's Market.

NASCAR race versus horse riding? That's like colonoscopy versus root canal.

Down the "rode?" Is that supposed to be a cute pun?

Do the equestrians plan to pick up their animals' manure? Or perhaps fix the rutted out, sandy and damaged soil they create? Wouldn't that be nice...

"Offensive" is subjective. I still don't know why the DNR doesn't require parade bags for horses that use shared trails, FAIL! Or better yet, make horse people clean up their crap in the parking lots as well... Waterloo needs to open up more land/trail for mountain bike cyclists.

somebody7 is exactly correct. The horses and guides from Horse N Around stables, riding from the DNR stable at 12891 Trist Road, Grass Lake (not Bush Road as stated above) ride on the beautiful bridle trails of Waterloo Recreation Area. The DNR seems extremely pleased that Sherri Richardson has returned this year with her gentle and well-trained trail horses (many of them rescues), to provide rides to a public who has apparently been starved for same, as several record-breaking weekends will attest. Yes, the horses poop on the trails, and it biodegrades. Some trails in Waterloo are reserved for hikers, some are reserved for horses, some are shared. As to the poop, one might find that as poop goes, equine poop is far less offensive to the olfactory sense than is canine poop, and certainly less offensive than that of homo sapiens; and especially less so than that of the masculine bovine. One may do well getting used to dealing with a little poop now and then, as life seems to be full of it at times. Please visit https://sites.google.com/site/horsenaroundstableswaterloo/ for all the latest on riding in one of the top 10 places in Michigan for riding on horseback. I rode at the Waterloo Stable many years ago and loved it, and was very sad to see it stay closed for so long. I am extremely pleased to see it reopen, with a great horsewoman and her superior team of assistants. The horses are top notch--not just fed and watered, but they are LOVED. I have never owned my own horse but always loved to ride, and I am happy to recommend the Horse N Around Stable at Waterloo (and Pinckney) for those who have never ridden and those who have experience.

They ride on designated equestrian trails, nature at its best (and not some contrived environment where all surfaces are completely level and free from organic matter).
