City selects artist for West Park project

Traven Pelletier of Ann Arbor has been chosen to provide artwork for a renovation project at West Park, the city announced today.

"Pelletier specializes in fine art, sculpture, and landscape design and has received numerous grants for his community ecological arts projects. He has exhibited locally and internationally. Pelletier was chosen through a competitive process following a call for art to Michigan artists," according to the announcement from the city's Public Art Commission and Park Advisory Commission. He is co-owner and designer at Lotus Gardenscapes.

The announcement describes the artwork as "two sculptural trees and boulders integrated into the seating area." (Part of the renovation involves new seating walls on the hill near the bandshell.) No rendering of the plan is available yet. It's expected to be installed by the end of this year.

Budget for the project is $10,000, funded through the city's Percent for Art program, which sets aside money from public-works projects to fund public art.

As detailed in the announcement, the larger renovation of the park is "designed to address storm water issues — including bioswales, native plantings, and an intermittent stream and wildlife habitat — as well as create new pathways, improved access to the park, a renovated parking area, and concrete seat walls built into the hillside to accommodate better viewing of events at the park bandshell."

“The fact that the park was undergoing a major overhaul that was changing the way it would be viewed, both aesthetically and environmentally, made it especially appealing to take a creative look at how art could be incorporated,” city Parks Planner Amy Kuras said in the press release.

In addition to the bandshell, the 23-acre West Park includes a ballfield, tennis courts, basketball courts, pathways, picnic areas and a playground.

Have to agree with you again David! I used to love the "Indian trails at West Park! Took my grandson there a couple times this past winter.
