CNN Hero Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow's in Ann Arbor for two events

By Jenn McKee

Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, named a CNN Hero for providing free daily meals to more than 400,000 children in 15 different countries, will be in Ann Arbor on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Wednesday, Feb. 27, MacFarlane-Barrow will speak at the Barton Hills Country Club during the Catholic Urban Project spring benefit, which starts at 6 p.m. The event will raise funds to aid the poor and disenfranchised in Ypsilanti, Flint and Detroit, and “empower young adults from around the country to spend the summer in service of the new evangelization.”

Tickets for the dinner and program are $125 per plate. For more information, call Suzanne at 734-482-1400, extension 15.

MacFarlane-Barrow will also answer questions at the Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty St. in Ann Arbor, after a screening of “Child31: The Story of Mary’s Meals,” on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. (Doors open at 6:30 p.m.) Admission is $5, or $3 for students.

In 1992, MacFarlane-Barrow (then a salmon farmer) and his brother were in a pub, in their native Scotland, when they saw a news report about refugee camps in Bosnia. Because they had good memories of visiting Bosnia as teens, they considered what they might do to help, and took a week off from work to collect food, clothing, medicine and blankets - which they drove to Bosnia.

While they were gone, more donations had accumulated, and MacFarlane-Barrow was thus inspired to quit his job, sell his house, and dedicate himself to helping people in need.

Here's a trailer for "Child31."
