Video from locals The Hop; Oscar ratings down; movement in DSO strike?

Music writer Roger LeLievre alerted me to this video newly posted to YouTube. By a local band called The Hop, it's well produced and full of recognizable Ann Arbor images (including Necto and the Fleetwood Diner):

• In an interview airing today on Wendy Williams' syndicated TV talk show, Aretha Franklin discusses her recent health issues.

• Striking Detroit Symphony Orchestra musicians have offered to return to work if management will agree to binding arbitration in their dispute.

• The Metro Times offers a handbook to its annual Blowout music festival.

• Real Detroit Weekly has a feature on the Hounds Below, fronted by Jason Stollsteimer of the Von Bondies.

• MTV.com previews Panic! At the Disco's upcoming album.

MOVIES

• A few days' perspective isn't making the Academy Awards show look any better. Despite a specific attempt to attract younger viewers, ratings were down substantially in that group. Perhaps more telling, the numbers dropped as the show went on.

TELEVISION

• Probably, you know, since he's having so much trouble getting his views out to the public, Charlie Sheen has joined Twitter. And elsewhere on the Charlie Sheen beat today, his children were removed from his custody.

• The Los Angeles Times has a feature on actor Zach Grenier, who calls Ann Arbor his hometown.

• MLive reports on plans to air the three remaining episodes of "Detroit 1-8-7," with the season (and possibly the series) finale showing on a Sunday.

• The "Jeopardy!" computer champion has been beaten by a New Jersey congressman.

• EW.com reports that Christina Hendricks will appear on an upcoming episode of "Top Chef Masters."

AND FINALLY ...

• Splash Universe River Run, the indoor water park in Dundee, will reopen Thursday following last summer's storm damage.
