Tony Curtis remembered; more on Broken Social Scene, Kid Cudi, Edgefest

The great, versatile Hollywood actor Tony Curtis has died at age 85.

Obituaries from USA Today and the Associated Press run down his amazing career (and remind us he never won as Oscar).

Watch for countless tributes in the coming days; an appreciation of his career from the UK's Guardian offers a start.

In this clip from "Some Like it Hot," Curtis makes a play for Marilyn Monroe while pretending to be rich — and doing his best Cary Grant impression in the bargain:

• A couple other notable Hollywood loss: Arthur Penn, director of "Bonnie and Clyde," has died at age 88, while actor Joe Mantell passed away at 94.

• Detroit News columnist Neal Rubin writes about "Flipped," the Rob Reiner movie that shot in Ann Arbor last year and opened recently in limited release.

COMEDY

• Comedian Greg Giraldo has died at age 44 following a drug overdose.

STAGE

• The national ratings for "Detroit 1-8-7" dropped a bit from last week's premiere.

• New judge Jennifer Lopez promises "American Idol" will be kinder in the post-Simon Cowell era. Wonder how that's going to work out for the ratings?

FESTIVALS & FAIRS

• The Saline reporter notes that Harvest Time returns to Rentschler Farm this weekend.

BOOKS

• I'm trying not to get too depressed over the fact that "Jersey Shore"'s Snooki is writing, or at least publishing, a novel.
