Ann Arbor-based composer and bassist Dave Sharp celebrates the release of his Secret Seven band's new CD on Friday with a concert at Live at PJ's. The native Detroiter and University of Michigan alum's latest recording, "7," features instrumental jazz mixed with funk grooves and Latin rhythms, creating a sound reminiscent of The Meters, Galactic and John Coltrane.

Sharp, who previously played with the modern jazz group Spheres of Influence and was a touring bassist for experimental rockers The Melvins, is joined in the Secret Seven by Motown saxophonist Chris Kaercher, with drums and percussion by Eric “Chucho” Wilhelm, and Dale Grisa on Hammond organ and piano. The "7" album boasts a variety of guest musicians as well, such as Eenor-Yayli Tanbur of Les Claypool's Frog Brigade, Ne-Yo touring guitarist Andre Frappier, and Alex Anest of Ann Arbor indie-folksters Delta 88.

  • In this day and age, I think it’s a nearly inarguable fact that television has a monumental effect on children, and unless parents are willing to lock their offspring in a magical anti-media closet complete with corruption filter, there’s very little chance of insulating kids from what’s on TV. read more

  • There are aspects of our childhoods that we carry with us when we get older, and one of these for me has been the children’s book. It is children’s literature that often becomes our first foray into suspended belief and imagined landscapes. It is when we first question what it means to see the world and see how life can change suddenly at night. read more
