Daytrotter tour of barns as venues bringing 5 bands to Dexter

By Ann Dwyer

Barn dances might just be making a comeback. And while there may be some country music in there, the Daytrotter Barnstormer shows aren’t about traditional folk dancing. Instead, they showcase some of the latest in indie acts, and they’re coming to Dexter on Sept. 1.

“We find really cool barns...people don’t usually get to see shows in barns,” said Sean Moeller, founder of Daytrotter. The barns, he said, are “just a really great environment for actually listening to music,” unlike clubs that are generally “80 percent chatterboxes.”

Five bands will perform at the Lakeview Farms Barn on Island Lake Road, roughly one mile west of Dexter Townhall Road.

Daytrotter.com has received a lot of attention from the music industry for its relaxed recording sessions of up-and-coming, as well as established, musicians.

Sessions are recorded in Daytrotter’s home base of Rock Island, Ill. They use an analog recording process with no editing. They then transfer the recording to an MP3 digital file, which they then post on the website and offer as a free download.

Their website claims they record “one band a day, every day, 28 Daytrotter Sessions songs each week.”

Some of the most recognizable acts to record there are Aimee Mann, Social Distortion and Ani DiFranco.

With the Barnstormer tours, Moeller and his gang can bring the music out of the studio and into the barn. They tour in the spring and fall. This is the fifth tour since Barnstormer began in 2009.

Many times, fans of the site volunteer their own barns or know a barn owner willing to play host.

Moeller says that while those barn owners not familiar with Daytrotter might be skeptical at first, the family-friendly nature of the shows changes their mind.

“Once we’re actually there, they want us back,” he said.

He credits the sound and lighting technicians for putting together shows in venues that can vary in size. Some barns can hold over 300 people, while ones like Lakeview can hold roughly 150.

“People are really shocked at how good the show sounds...and looks,” he said.

The bands performing in Dexter will be White Rabbits (indie rock), Doug Paisley (alternative country), Wildlife (indie rock), Princeton (indie pop), and Hacienda (Texas retro-pop).

If going, Moeller said to keep in mind there are no seats and to purchase tickets in advance since the shows often sell out. He also emphasizes that the shows are all ages and with the early start time, no one should hesitate to bring the whole family.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Show time is at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Purchase tickets at Daytrotter.com. Lakeview Farms Barn is located at 12075 Island Lake Road, Dexter.

I attended the Barnstormer 4 stop at Lakeview Farms at the end of April and LOVED it. I'm going back next week and can't wait!
