Dead Schembechlers band is back, vowing to play in Ann Arbor

By Bob Needham

Remember the Dead Schembechlers, the Columbus-based pseudo-punk band that created something resembling a career out of bashing things related to Michigan/Ann Arbor/Wolverines football? ("Bomb Ann Arbor Now" is one of their more printable ditties.) They appear to be back, and they say they're going to play here before this year's Michigan-Ohio State football game.

The band, which has a fairly long history in Columbus, changed its name after the death of its namesake, longtime University of Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler, in 2006. But as the Bastard Sons of Woody they didn't seem to generate as much publicity as they did with the old name, which — I'm just guessing here — may help account for its return.

Now, the Palestra Music Blog has an interview with band member "Bo Biafra" in which he states the band's intent to play its first-ever gig in Ann Arbor on Nov. 21 before the Michigan-Ohio State game, which will be at Michigan Stadium.

However, neither the interview nor the band's web site has details on where or when the appearance will take place. We'll be sure to keep you posted.

If you absolutely must have a sample, here's the video for "Bomb Ann Arbor Now":

Stay classy, fellas.

the interview was great and i truly hope michigan fans will see that this is something they do for fun and some side cash....always wondered why there has never been a michigan punk band that would rival them....that would be awesome to see...i know i will be there with about 50 of my closest buckeye compadres....as we are every year they play in ann arbor....

actually bob, the named changed after bo's death and then when the band donated money to cs mott's out of respect to bo, they were contacted by someone in the schembechler clan and they were given the blessing to retake their original name the dead schembechlers back....had nothing to do with lack of attention as if you knew anything about the band's following they pack the place full of buckeye fans who are having a good time with the rivalry.. Whether you think its classless or not, these guys saw a way to make money off the biggest and best rivalry in sports and while i would never let my kids listen to most of their songs, keep it in perspective of what it is....guys entertaining a crowd while getting ready for the battle.... and they are always welcome to come to my neighborhood and play...id pay for the permits
