Elbow Room goes pop on Saturday

By Chrysta Cherrie

Though the weather may indicate otherwise, spring is here. Get in the mood with a night of Midwestern indie pop at the Elbow Room, featuring Fields of Industry, Santa Monica Swim and Dive Club, and The 1959 Hat Co.

Lansing/Ypsilanti-based Fields of Industry began in 1999 as member Joshua Barton's home recording project but soon grew to a full-fledged band. As the band's sound has evolved, so has its lineup, with Eric Gallippo and Joel Schrauben rounding out the core personnel. Citing such diverse influences as the brooding country of Johnny Cash, the noisy pop of the Jesus and Mary Chain and the neo-psychedelic explorations of Spacemen 3, Fields of Industry create "(M)inimal, ambient but ultimately rewarding music... surprisingly melodic, hypnotically likable," according to the Grand Rapids Press. Their latest recording, "Two Dogs, A Television," was hailed by NPR's Second Stage as "(A)n almost heartbreakingly spare album, steeped as much in folk and country as in shoegaze and psychedelia... spacious and richly-produced." Listen to Fields of Industry "I've Got a Feeling" (MP3).

Santa Monica Swim and Dive Club, once a duo comprised of local indie hero Fred Thomas (best known as the frontman of Saturday Looks Good to Me) and dream-pop purveyor Tim Sendra (Veronica Lake, Madison Electric), showcases a new lineup with the Elbow Room gig. Rob Logan (A Working Model) and Heather Phares join Sendra to perform songs from Santa Monica's debut release, "Mild Honey," a collection of sunshiney pop tunes that'll put a spring in your step. Listen to Santa Monica Swim and Dive Club "Buried in Snow" (MP3).

Rounding out the bill is Toledo-based band The 1959 Hat Co. Inspired by Motown girl groups and '90s psych-pop collective Elephant 6, The 1959 Hat Co. mix lush orchestration and horn arrangements into their musical melange.

Fields of Industry WSG Santa Monica Swim and Dive Club, The 1959 Hat Co.: Saturday, May 15 at the Elbow Room, 6 South Washington Street, Ypsilanti. $5. 10 p.m. 734-483-6374.
