Today, Zingerman’s Bakehouse is the backdrop for the Jason Segel/Emily Blunt romantic comedy, “Five Year Engagement,” now being shot locally. But instead of drawing crowds of curious, star-struck customers to the still-open-for-business bakery, manager Katie Frank noted that business had been “slower than normal.”

“It’s hard to tell,” Frank said, in regard to whether this is a result of “Engagement”’s film shoot. “ … I don’t think (the filming) is impeding business, but I don’t know.”

Of course, as always with major film shoots, loads of trucks, trailers, equipment, white tents, and crew people are taking up a good bit of space in the Bakehouse’s parking lot — so even those who didn’t know what was happening today would likely get a clue as they approached.

Preliminary setup, mostly involving running cords and arranging for power sources, began on Tuesday, and Frank estimates that the crew arrived at around 7 a.m. this morning.

“I was here at 8, and things were well under way when I got here,” said Frank. She said filming started fairly early this morning, and the “Engagement” team expects to wrap at the Bakehouse late this afternoon.

The Bakehouse wasn’t significantly cosmetically altered for the shoot. And while Frank couldn’t say much about the nature of the scenes being filmed today, some of which involve stars Segel and Blunt, she did mention that people were filmed shaping bread, and about 10 Zingerman’s employees had volunteered to work as extras. (Local “movie stalker” blogger Bananadoc posted some photos from a visit to the Bakehouse today, and Bananadoc claims that at one point, Segel’s character works as a baker at Zingerman’s in the film.)

Frank said that arrangements for filming at the Bakehouse has been “a few months in the works,” and that the “Engagement” crew has been “so pleasant to be around and so cooperative.”

“The only surprising thing has been the sheer size of the crew and the equipment,” said Frank. “But it’s all so organized. Like clockwork.”
