"Cabal of Belgian beer lovers in Dexter?"
No, it's just master brewer Ron Jeffries.
The New York Times has a blind tasting review of Belgian-style ales today, and Dexter's Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales took the top spot with their Oro de Calabaza Golden Ale. Also in the top 5 is Good Harbor Golden Ale from Leelanau, also brewed in Dexter by Jolly Pumpkin founder Ron Jeffries.
The characteristic that sets Belgian-style ales apart is the use of distinctive yeasts. "While the choice of yeast is important for any brewer," explains the author, Eric Asimov, "it is crucial for the producers of Belgian beers, who look to yeasts for many of the idiosyncratic flavors in their brews."
Jolly Pumpkin's Oro de Calabaza was praised for being "spicy, fruity and floral, with soft carbonation and fresh, vibrant flavors," while Good Harbor Golden Ale is described as "unusual" and "funky."
