Ann Arbor is "a Michigan college town with a degree in great food"

By Jessica Webster

Limité Magazine has a glowing story up on the Ann Arbor area dining scene. Vinology, Paesano, Arbor Brewing Company, Mediterrano, The Jolly Pumpkin and The Common Grill are profiled. The author, Leslie Long, expressed surprise that a college town of Ann Arbor's size focuses on sustainable, seasonal, organic and artisanal foods rather than "the expected student mainstays of chicken wings, nachos and burgers."

Actually, the sad fact is that by national standards, Ann Arbor's restaurant scene is horrid. Main St. is a culinary desert. The main problem is that very few restaurants are run by people who actually cook. The rents are so high that it is impossible to take risks with original food.

I don't consider myself a foodie in the least, but most of Ann Arbor's "must-have" restaurants just haven't lived up to their reputations.

I agree with you. I find all the places that peope say are so good are just over priced places that through some cranberries in your salad and think it's art.

Sure, we have a few gems, but they are expensive. This town lacks good food that is also a good value - a place to eat that is not a chain, but family budget friendly food that is not fried and has good taste. Simple? You would think. If you believe otherwise, I will welcome some suggestions as I have not found many described establishments compared to other places I have lived.
