Wine Tasting: The Red Grapes of Spain - el Vino Tinto. 6:30-8:30 p.m. Ann Arbor Cooks, 5060 Jackson Road, Ann Arbor. It wasn't long ago that Spanish wines were seldom considered classy wines to bring to our table (with a few notable exceptions). The wines of mid to late 20th century Spain and before were often considered by many too rustic, oxidized, or simply impolite. But that has changed drastically in the last 30 years; these days, the wines of Spain are everywhere in the United States, frequently invading shelves in a saturating and exponential manner. Spain has also many grapes which are indigenous to the area, but also known by different names in other parts of Europe. I want to show you five of these examples with Tempranillo being the only obligatory appearance. I will choose from Bobal, Carinena (aka Samso, Carignan), Garnacha (Grenache), Graciano, Mencia, and Monastrell (Mourvedre). Join me in this exploration of what Spaniards call vino tinto. $50. 734-645-1030 or www.annarborcooks.com.
