Grange Kitchen & Bar in Ann Arbor

It's beginning to look a little like Christmas in downtown Ann Arbor. Midnight Madness and snow will soon be upon us. The trees are strung with lights, and the merchants have decorated their windows in hopes that shoppers soon will be here.

To take advantage of that increased downtown shopping activity, Chef Brandon Johns has added a lunch menu at his acclaimed new restaurant, Grange Kitchen & Bar. I made the walk down Liberty Street this afternoon to check it out.

The good news: Want to try out the farm-fresh, sustainably grown, innovative dishes that have put Grange Kitchen & Bar on the map but don't want to brave the dinner lines and prices? Lunch at the Grange is a good bet. Prices are fairly reasonable for a downtown lunch, with starters in the $4-$7 range and main courses ranging from $8-$14.

While the menu is limited primarily to salads and sandwiches, those offerings are far from your ordinary fare. I ordered the hamburger: a house-ground, grass-fed burger topped with a fried egg and bacon hollandaise sauce. The house-cut fries were served with smoked salt and garlic mayo. It was delicious, but the burger patty itself seemed almost extraneous. Next time - and believe me, there will be a next time-I'm going to order the fried egg sandwich. Or maybe the roasted heritage turkey club. Or the fish and chips. Oh, the choices!

The bad news: As it stands, lunch at Grange is a limited time offer, only available through Dec. 23. It's possible that they'll continue past that date, depending on the traffic. "We're on a see how it goes basis with it," explained my server. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Grange Kitchen & Bar is open for lunch Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., from now until Dec. 23.

I went back to Grange for lunch on Friday, and have a quick caveat: be aware that unless you request it heated, the meatloaf sandwich is served cold.

I ate dinner here one Saturday night over the summer and was less than pleased. The service was terrible, our appetizer came before our drinks, the waitress had no clue as to what was going on with the menu, didn't clear dishes at the appropriate intervals and the food was very disappointing. I even sent an email outlining these facts, not looking for anything free, and didn't even receive a response. I have fought the urge to return and give this place a second chance because I can't see giving my time and money to a place that can't give me the hospitality one would expect from such an establishment.
