Calling all canners! Preserving Traditions, a local non-profit group, plans a canning workday on Sunday, July 26th, from 1-4 p.m. at the Pittsfield Grange Hall. Bring your fruit, sugar, spices, jars, and lids.

Now's the perfect time to make and can jams, because berries and fruits are in abundance at local farmers markets. Novices are welcome at Sunday's workday — experienced canners will be able to share tips and know-how. The Grange is a great place to work and learn — its kitchen is equipped with canning equipment, so you don't need to have your own.

If you're interested in attending, please send an e-mail to preservetrad@gmail.com.

Preserving Traditions sponsors occasional classes at the Grange. In recent months, participants have learned to make fresh pasta, strawberry jam and fruit pies. Next up: Learn how to make cucumber pickles at the Aug. 9 workshop. Also coming are are more workdays — one for putting up tomatoes and another involving apples.

Classes and workdays are free for Grange members and $5 for others.

I can't believe I forgot this one - nice feature and I'm glad it's getting notice. Preserving Traditions is a wonderful organization!
