Make your own Chick-Fil-A sandwich at home

By Jessica Webster

chick-fil-a-sandwich.jpg

Chick-Fil-A has been national headline news for weeks now, and I've watched the debate over the politics and ethics involved play out in my Facebook feed. Most of the arguments are exactly what you'd expect, but there was one sentiment that kept getting repeated; one that caught me off guard.

"I'm sorry, I can't worry about the politics. I just won't give up my delicious Chick-Fil-A sandwich."

So what's so awesome about the Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich? Michiganders have had little chance to find out. The only restaurant in the state is located on the campus of Oakland University, and according to the restaurant's voicemail, it's closed for the summer semester.

Never fear, curious poultry fans. Food blog SeriousEats.com's Food Lab has spent much time and effort figuring out the magic behind the Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich. Serious Eats Chief Creative Officer J. Kenji Lopez-Alt reveals the step-by-step here, or you can skip right to the recipe.

It's stories like this that remind me exactly why AnnArbor.com only prints twice/week. Not only do I find it disturbing that someone would want to try to re-create a fast food sandwich in their own home, but it also disgusts me that someone actually took the time to write this article from what has been long known to be one of the most gay friendly small town in the country. I don't think it's funny, I find it offensive. I hope you're embarrassed.

Jake C

Fri, Aug 10, 2012 : 1:28 a.m.

Um, I think many people view the purpose of this article as being: "Do you like this chicken sandwich, but disagree with the maker's business practices? Here's how to make it yourself so your money doesn't go towards a cause you disagree with!" Are you seeing it as something different?

Richard

Rather average food to get so excited over. Who cares what the owner thinks ? Some of my gay friends who like the food at Chick fil A still go there. No one is forcing anyone to go or keeping anyone away.

Jake C

Richard: You're quite right that no one really cares too much about what the owner *thinks*. It's about what the owner *does* that is the issue.

To all those who are using the "it's a first amendment issue" it is not... here's a very recent article that beautifully sums up some of the things I would like to tell you... "When gays get so angry about a chicken sandwich, it is because Chick-fil-A has given around $5 million to fight to discriminate against us. When we praise brave Eagle Scouts who give up their badges in protest of the Boy Scouts of America's prejudice, it's not about scoring political points; it's because there are kids in dens who are being taught to believe that they are less than equal. When we rant about the pastor who preaches that gays should be thrown into a concentration camp, we scream out of fear. And our fears are justified -- in the last seven days, a lesbian in Nebraska was carved with a knife, a gay man in Oklahoma was firebombed, and a girl in Kentucky was kicked and beaten -- her jaw broken and her teeth knocked out -- while her assailants allegedly hurled anti-gay slurs at her. I am your coworker, your frat brother, your cousin, your neighbor. And I am watching as you defend institutionalized discrimination. Eat all the chicken sandwiches you want. But, realize that behind this debate are real people -- kids like the girl in Kentucky who fear for their safety, women like Sally Ride's widow who are denied their spouse's Social Security benefits. Even if it doesn't seem like it, we want nothing more than to leave behind the angry debates on Facebook and on Capitol Hill. There are, after all, a lot of pictures of One Direction and grandkids we would rather be posting, sharing and 'liking.' " full article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/conor-gaughan/chick-fil-a-homophobia_b_1711566.html this is not a fight over chicken or free speech

@Joe Hood: We have multiple problems in our country right now. 1) Single unwed mothers are having unwanted children, both in America and overseas. 2) Gay couples want to adopt/raise children just like most other couples. Ooh, I have an idea, let's allow committed monogamous gay male couples to adopt children from parents who don't want children! And let's allow committed monogamous lesbian couples to adopt or use scientific methods to birth their own children (via Y chromosome donors). It's a win-win situation! But seriously, if your only defense against gay marriage is that gay couples can't produce children, you should also support laws that would dissolve marriages of infertile couples. But you'd have to be some kind of monster to support that....

Joe Hood

Thu, Aug 9, 2012 : 3:09 a.m.

M_A: there, you've belittled marriage, calling it a little piece of paper. Really, marriage doesn't have that much to do with love, as far as the state is concerned. The state's interest is in stable families raising more children (hell, in the Balkan states, they pay you for having kids--other countries give you oodles of maternity leave). As a society, we need kids. The state has a vested interest in children and gives advantages to those that are set up to make more kids. There are same sex couples that can manage to raise children properly (I know some)( though there is not enough studies to document this and there are more balanced studies coming out that prove this may not be the case), but a same sex couple's success is on an unsustainable method and therefore the exception for a policy such as marital benefits (perhaps there is another way). I'm glad your ideal, at the least, involves two people because there is already a California congressman proposing marriage involve more than two people. There are many others that would like to re-define marriage in all other sorts of ways with little regard for consequences.

Modern_Atheist

Tue, Aug 7, 2012 : 11:09 p.m.

and I never said I "hated marriage" or was even against it in any way. If you want to go by "the way of the bible" marriage could mean you trading your daughter (aka: slave/property) for foreskin or gold. Simple minded conservatives getting silly ideas and twisting words about nothing.

Modern_Atheist

Tue, Aug 7, 2012 : 10:37 p.m.

free speech wasn't a problem when JC Penny hired Ellen Degeneres as a spokesperson and conservative jerks decided to boycott the store... how is that much different? Joe Hood, marriage is great... a bit silly to define love with a piece of paper but still great. In my "ideal world" marriage would be 2 people who love each other getting married no matter what their sexual orientation is.

Z-man

For every pastor who is actually preaching against homosexuality, there are atheists working diligently to tear down every cross in the public square that they can. You have every right to your views against those of the CEO of Chick-Fil-A, but don't think for a minute that there isn't a serious free speech issue here; they have a right to their opinions as well. And this free speech issue is significantly amplified when a few big city mayors threaten to use political power to interfere with the business interests of companies whose personal or religious beliefs are not congruent with their own. That is a blatant abuse of power, plain and simple.

Modern_Atheist

Tue, Aug 7, 2012 : 10:56 a.m.

I see from the link that it's cayenne pepper that makes it spicy. Someone in Huntsville, Alabama says he did not want to give up his spicy chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A. The photo above reminds me of the portobello burgers I made just this morning, but with a lot less oil and salt. I didn't have enough Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP), so I used more Italian blended cheese. No pickles, but chopped zucchini along with sun-dried tomatoes went right into the meat substitute. This recipe I used came from the South Beach Diet Quick & Easy Recipes cookbook. Where it called for salt and pepper, I used sea salt and cayenne pepper. Jessica, the cook on the link provided never mentioned how much sea salt to use for a Chick-fil-A sandwich, just kosher and regular. I only use peanut oil for Thai dishes, and those come from Live Better America, formerly Eat Better America.

Jessica Webster

Tue, Aug 7, 2012 : 2:57 a.m.

I love portobello burgers, Ann. Did you blend the mushrooms with the TVP? Peanut oil gets used a lot in fad food (see 5 Guys Burgers & Fries) which can be a conundrum for those with peanut allergies.

Personally, I feel "Ann Arbor.com is using very POOR judgement in posting a Chick-Fil-A recipe. If gays want to boycott the restaurant chain, that's their choice. But, for AnnArbor.com to get involved and attempt to undermine Chick-Fil-A by posting a recipe that would allow boy-cotters to benefit from a moral stance that they have made is biased and out of line. Feel free yo voice an opinion, if you must, however posting their recipe reveals which side of the fence you support and that, in itself, is incredibly offensive to Christians that have taken a moral stance on the issue.

Modern_Atheist

Tue, Aug 7, 2012 : 10:39 p.m.

@USRepublic... plan on trading your daughter for 10 forsekin any time soon? The bible says that's cool.

Modern_Atheist

Tue, Aug 7, 2012 : 1:48 p.m.

And @GREG, it's not just "gays" who are boycotting chick-fil-a, it is people from all sexes defending human rights. You do not have to be gay to support freedom and equality. Nor do you have to be gay to oppose a company that gives money to groups who think homosexuality is a disease that can be cured, or businesses that give money to groups who support bills in Uganda that promotes the slaughter of homosexuals. This is a human rights issue.

Modern_Atheist

Tue, Aug 7, 2012 : 11:43 a.m.

Way to go KarenH, you're the kind of christian that is nice to know exists these days. Those telling you you're not a Christian because you don't believe homosexuality is wrong "because the bible says so" probably mix fibers, eat shellfish, play football/eat bacon on a daily basis. These bigots need to stop picking and choosing what bible verses they believe they should follow.

USRepublic, I am Christian enough not to care who thinks I am Christian enough, and I am Christian enough to love my neighbors and not judge others. I also eat shrimp and don't believe that women are the property of their husbands or that slavery is appropriate under any circumstance, though it certainly was acceptable by some of those who wrote in the bible. Regardless, we live in a country that is not ruled by a single religion, where we are supposed to have equal rights. Christians who object to my equality can object all they want but when they interfere and try to influence laws against me, that harm my family, then they are not being Christians at all. There is no morality in trying to harm families.

It's about our troubling willingness to patronize a company that so brazenly sinks its funds into hate campaigns and whose president genuinely believes that God will seek terrible vengeance on us for our country's growing tolerance of homosexuals."

KarenH

Mon, Aug 6, 2012 : 11:17 p.m.

How on earth is it offensive to Christians? All the Christians I know, including myself, do NOT support organizations that try to limit the rights of minority Americans. All the Christians I know condemn the organizations that support Uganda's "Kill the Gays" bill, and are critical of any business that supports those organizations (like Chick-Fil-A). All the Christians I know are morally opposed to those who use their Christianity to promote an agenda of hate and oppression.

Chief Creative Officer J. Kenji Lopez-Alt needs a new job title...I don't see much creativity in trying to rip off Chick-Fil-A's recipe, nor do I understand AA.com's desire to publish their recipe and undermine their business. I personally see no reason to avoid Chick-Fil-A because the personal views of their CEO may not agree with mine, but I find the threats by the mayors of Chicago, Boston, and San Francisco to prevent the company from doing business in their cities to be an egregious abuse of power and or Chick-Fil-A's first amendment rights. Particularly disgusting is the hipocracy of Chicago mayor Rahm Emmanuel, who had no problem with Barack Obama's position on gay marriage when he was Obama's chief of staff and before Obama flip-flopped on the issue.

Jake C

Fri, Aug 10, 2012 : 1:07 a.m.

So, every time I cook a good steak at home, am I trying to rip off the Chop House? Every time I make a hamburger, am I ripping off McDonalds? Trying to reverse-engineer a product is a creative & difficult endeavor and I think it's pretty cool, whether it's figuring out the secret ingredients in Coca-Cola or a Chicken Sandwich, or how Apple produced their iPads. As for the comments by those mayors, even though I agree with them politically I find their comments dumb and unproductive. It's one thing for a president to say he is conflicted on the issue of gay marriage. It's quite another thing for a corporation to donate millions of dollars to groups that would love to make homosexuality a crime punishable by death.

Z-man

I didn't know that MIT had a culinary program! I subscribe to Cooks Illustrated, and to me their writers have serious food credibility. That doesn't change the fact that recreating someone else's recipe is an activity that falls short of being creative, especially when the recipe in question is a deep-fried chicken fillet on a bun with a couple of pickle slices. His title of Chief Creative Officer might be better applied to endeavors more sophisticated than ripping off fast food recipes.

Kristina Birk

Mon, Aug 6, 2012 : 11:52 p.m.

Politics aside... You might want to get more familiar with Lopez-Alt's work before questioning his title... He's MIT educated and previously worked at Cooks Illustrated, so he's got a lot of cred in the food writing world. A chicken sandwich may not be objectively impressive, but he comes up with some seriously cool food hacks in his current column at SE.

D.M. - it takes a lot of oil to deep fry chicken. It would certainly be more economical to fry more than 4 sandwiches worth of chicken at a time for that reason. Alternatively, you can reuse your fryer oil a few times after straining it through cheesecloth or a coffee filter.
