Pouring this weekend at Grizzly Peak: Homebrew competition winner's porter
That’s what Brighton homebrewer Mark Malowicki will be doing this weekend at Grizzly Peak, 120 W. Washington. He was the winner of Grizzly’s 3rd Annual Brew Off, held May 12.
The competition was open to Grizzly Peak Mug Club members, with the winner getting to brew a full batch of his beer with Grizzly head brewer Duncan Williams (pictured above right, doing his thing) to serve to the public. Malowicki’s “Bear Bones Brown Porter” beat out 18 other beers, according to the taste buds of a judging panel composed of Williams, his assistant brewers, Grizzly’s Chef Neal, and two other guest judges. All entries were judged on accuracy of style, quality, and drinkability.
Williams describes Bear Bones as a great British-style porter: chocolatey aroma with a caramel malt flavor ending with a subtle roasted finish. He and Malowicki brewed seven barrels (a bit more than 200 gallons) to be served on Grizzly’s rotating guest tap beginning this weekend.
Malowicki, who by day is a GM Powertrain mechanical engineer at the Milford Proving Grounds, brewed his first batch of beer in college, about 17 years ago. “It was drinkable—but barely,” he said. “I didn’t start brewing on a regular basis until about 8 years ago.”
In those eight years, he’s learned just what he likes. “Porters are by far my favorite style of beer, and I’ve been working on getting a good recipe for a while, tweaking things slightly with each batch.”
Now that he’s found that magic combination, how does he plan to celebrate?
“I’m planning on dragging everyone I know down to Grizzly Peak to try out the beer!”

I love this kind of thing - I hope it will get some homebrewers to think about doing more than homebrew. My DH loves porter, but I'm not sure we can make it anywhere this weekend - crazy schedule!
