Restaurant Inspections for Washtenaw County in September 2011

Washtenaw County Public Health's Environmental Health Division inspects all food service establishments in the county, including bars, restaurants, schools and seasonal vendors —about 1,110 facilities in total! Inspection results are now published monthly on AnnArbor.com.

Why do we inspect?

Inspections help to ensure that safe food is served to the public. Sanitarians (otherwise known as health inspectors) use the Michigan Food Law of 2000 and the 2005 FDA Food Code when doing the inspections and are looking for critical and non-critical food safety violations.

How frequent are inspections?

Routine inspections take place twice per year, or once per year if the business is only open seasonally. Routine inspections are unannounced. Environmental Health will initiate additional inspections if a foodborne illness or other substantial complaint is reported.

Each inspection is a snapshot in time, and conditions found at the restaurant are not necessarily the conditions that could be found in the restaurant at other times. Sanitarians ask many questions about the menu, operations and procedures to get the best possible idea of the day-to-day conditions of the restaurant.

Critical vs. non-critical violations

Sanitarians are looking for critical and non-critical violations during inspections. Critical violations can lead directly to foodborne illness and must be corrected immediately. Examples of critical violations include an employee not washing hands before preparing food, storing food at improper temperatures and a dish machine not properly sanitizing dishes.

Non-critical violations may not directly lead to foodborne illness but are important to the overall safety and sanitation of the facility. Non-critical violations must be corrected within 90 days of the routine inspection and include items such as employees not wearing hats or hairnets, not covering food during storage and dirty floors.

What if I have a complaint?

Environmental Health responds to general restaurant complaints as well as foodborne illness complaints. Please call our office at 734-222-3800 to file a complaint or to report a suspected foodborne illness.

I'd like to see the return of letter grades posted prominently in the restaurants. I think that motivates restaurant owners/managers/workers to keep things up to standard.

Another motivating tool would be a requirement that they post the results of the Health Dept. inspections prominently in their restaurants. It'll never happen.

If you go to the highlighted link you can find the details of the offenses. I can see why Saline Little Caesar's Pizza was/is closed.... I had to stop reading after "accumulated food debris" followed by too many details about "mice". Yikes. I guess I have to say "thanks for the heads up inspectors".

Asia City has some nice numbers. I am wondering when the Subaway on Platt will be thrown into the mix. Went by the other day and it looks like it is almost ready to open.

Saline's Little Caesar's Pizza (are they still closed?) with 5/14 critical/noncritical violations and Weber's with 5/8 appear to be the "winners" this month. For how long has Weber's been around? They really should have this food safety stuff down at this point. Five critical violations is inexcusable.

Have not eaten at Webers since 2007 when I not only received my filet overdone 3 times, but also food poisoning. I was told I did not know what medium-rare means and that the pale pink/gray filet was indeed cooked to their standard.

According to the report of the inspection on 9/20/11 (see <a href="http://www.swordsolutions.com/inspections/pgeSearchRest.asp?Hit=DirectSearch&LastCty=28" rel='nofollow'>http://www.swordsolutions.com/inspections/pgeSearchRest.asp?Hit=DirectSearch&LastCty=28</a> ), the critical violations at Weber's consisted of (1) Numerous kitchen items (food slicer, various pans, can opener, coffee carafe, etc.) were unclean; (2) Improper cooling or (3) heating of cooked food; (4) insufficiently hot water to sanitize the used dishes; (5) Foods in the cooler that were expired, and other foods that had no expiration date listed. And these were just the critical violations. None of these relate to the age or structure of the building. Some of the noncritical violations are of significant concern to me as well. I haven't eaten at Weber's in years, as their menu is pretty dissimilar from what I might want to eat. Based on this inspection, there is no way I would eat there again, at least until they get a much more favorable inspection in +/- six months.

Restaurants in older buildings often get written up on structural issues. I used to work in a place that got written up because the janitorial closet was six feet from the end of a counter where they made salads. There can also be stuff likes cracks in the flooring and walls, etc. Still, 5/8 is pretty high - seems there's likely some food handling issues there.
