The Week in Beer: Drinking in a winter wonderland

Friday, Feb. 4 » The beers of Original Gravity Brewing take center stage at the latest Michigan beer tasting at Whole Foods Cranbrook, 990 W. Eisenhower. Join resident beer guru Jimmy at the bar for $3 glasses (or $1 samples) of Bellywasher Scotch Ale, Southpaw IPA, and Mason Brewer's Best Bitter Ale and meet and talk beer with Original Gravity owner and brewer Brad Sancho. Oh, and you can get your grocery shopping done while you’re there, too.
Saturday, Feb. 5 » One of the silly marketing gimmicks used by Coors is the label that turns blue when the bottle is cold, because I guess you couldn’t tell by touching it. But if you like cheap, “cold-activated” beer, forget the Coors and head to Arbor Brewing, 114 E. Washington. Beginning at noon and going until dusk, Arbor’s sidewalk seating area will be open for the second annual Winter Warriors event, wherein those foolhardy enough to sit outside get their beers for $1. The food menu is limited to chili, should you choose to also dine out in the cold. Bring your long johns and parka.
Tuesday, Feb. 8 » The popular Gulo Gulo Northwest Lager makes a limited return to the taps at Wolverine State Brewing, 2019 W. Stadium. The additional three months of lagering mean this hoppy but well balanced brew will be even smoother and yummier than you remember. Get some before it’s gone again.
Wednesday, Feb. 9 » Over at Plymouth’s Liberty Street Brewing, 149 W. Liberty, owner and brewer Joe Walters is unveiling the first full batch of Pooh Beer Honey Porter, brewed with plenty of Michigan honey for a crisp finish to this high-gravity brew. Never mind the hot toddy, this sounds more like just what the doctor ordered.
Thursday, Feb. 10 » Take off that winter chill with the warming power of high-octane beers. More than two dozen of them — including barleywines, double IPAs, Scotch ales, and more — will be available for your tasting pleasure at Arbor Brewing’s Big Ale Tasting from 7-9 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance ($35 at the door, if available) and include an appetizer buffet and the chance to win swank beer glassware, apparel, and other gewgaws. Call 734-213-1393 to order.
