The Week in Beer: Have a cold one in the cold

Nothing like some cold beers out in the snow!

It’s another exciting Week in Beer, but before we get to the fun part of our program, your humble correspondent, more humble than usual, must issue a correction and an apology. It seems last week I plugged in the wrong brewery for Whole Foods Cranbrook’s Jan. 29 Michigan beer tasting event, which actually featured the beers of Founders, not New Holland, as I erroneously wrote. That’s what I get for sampling one too many beers while writing, I guess. So: a big "sorry about that" to anyone who was misled by my error.

With that unpleasantness aside, let’s see what’s in store for local beer lovers in the next 7 days.

Friday, February 5 This time, it’s true! Michigan Meet the Brewer night at Whole Foods Market Cranbrook, 990 W. Eisenhower, features Fred Bueltmann of New Holland Brewing Co. and a number of tasty New Holland beers. From 5-7 p.m., enjoy draft pints for $3, 4 oz. sample pours for $1 and bottles at various prices.

Saturday, February 6 Get downtown from 12-6pm for Winter Warriors, an event designed to reward those hardy enough to brave the cold for a few hours of fun. Participating restaurants—including Arbor Brewing, Grizzly Peak, Jolly Pumpkin, Blue Tractor, and the Arena—will be bringing out their sidewalk furniture and offering discounted beers (and hot drinks) for outdoor patrons. Dress warm and come thirsty.

Monday, February 8 At 4pm, Jolly Pumpkin, 311 S. Main, is releasing Madrugada Obscura, a seasonal, well balanced stout that combines traditional roasty, bitter flavors with that sour Belgian inflection we expect from Jolly Pumpkin brewer Ron Jeffries, who will be on hand to talk beer with interested parties. For $40, you can stick around until 7pm when a special three-course beer dinner featuring Madrugada Obscura begins. Call 734-913-2730 for more information and to reserve, and check Jolly Pumpkin’s Facebook page for the menu.

Thursday, February 11 If you’re still cold from being a Winter Warrior, come to Arbor Brewing, 114 E. Washington, from 7-9pm for the Big Ale tasting, featuring a couple dozen high-octane barleywines, old ales, double IPAs, and other brews guaranteed to shake off your chills. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 the day of and include a snack buffet. Call 734-213-1393 to order.

Notes on the Napkin

  • Wolverine State Brewing Co. has purchased and officially moved in its brewing equipment at the former Big George’s site at 2019 W. Stadium. Owners Matt Roy and Trevor Thrall have pushed back their original schedule estimate and now believe the brewery and tap room will open in May. The Michigan Daily has a story, and pictures from the move-in are up at Wolverine's blog.
  • Coming on tap in the next week at Liberty Street Brewing in Plymouth is Barber's Garden IPA, hopped with Cascadey goodness and weighing in at 6.7% ABV, and Liberty Street Rye PA, a 6.0% ABV IPA made with guess what? Yep, rye malt!
  • The cover story of this month's Current has a rundown of our area's many fine brewing establishments. Take a look.
  • Did you miss Beer Wars, the documentary film about how the corporate brewing behemoths use dirty tricks to try to keep the heroic little-guy brewers of good beer down? Now you can catch it on DVD or even download it. Check the official site for details.

That's your 100% accurate beer forecast for the week. Until next time, if it's cold... drink it!

Yeah, at least there was a happy consolation prize for any Bueltmann groupies who went there expecting something else. :)

Well, Dave, I'm glad I went to Whole Foods last week, despite it being the "wrong" brewery that was featured. They had Founder's Old Curmudgeon barrel-aged barleywine on tap for their ridiculously low regular price.
