The Week in Beer: Plants and birds and rocks and beers

It’s time to get environmental! No, there’s no need to don a loincloth and try starting a fire with two sticks (does that ever work?). You can do your part for the trees and birds and dirt and stuff by… drinking beer.

That’s right, there are three flavorific opportunities to assuage your guilt over despoiling Mother Earth coming up, and your Week in Beer (naturally) has all the green deets.

Today, April 22, Earth Day
As mentioned last week, the Corner Brewery, 720 Norris, Ypsilanti, is the place to be for a different, non-St. Patrick’s Day kind of green beer. Brewer Logan Schaedig scoured all of Gaia to find the freshest ingredients for his 100 percent organic Green Giant Imperial Pilsner, which releases at 6 p.m. Beer and snacks free for Mug Club members; $10 for everyone else. And be sure to ask about Corner’s new Green Brewery Club.

Saturday, April 24
The annual Dance for the Earth party is taking place at Downtown Home and Garden, 210 S. Ashley, from 8-11 p.m. What does this have to do with beer? Well, the good folks of Wolverine State Brewing Co., whose tap room is under construction on West Stadium, will have their lager on hand as part of the event’s cash bar. Live music, food, and a silent auction round out the festivities. Tickets are $10 for students; others pay $12.50 in advance or $15 at the door. Call the Ecology Center at 734-761-3186 x120 for more information or to order tickets.

Friday, April 30
Looking ahead a bit to Arbor Day, you have the chance to support the city of Ann Arbor’s Adopt-a-Park program as well as celebrate our leafy, barky friends by drinking beer at, appropriately enough, Arbor Brewing, 114 E. Washington. Arbor is donating $1 from each sale of its commemorative small-batch run of Spruce Ale to help plant trees in the city’s parks. Get there early; if this batch of Spruce Ale is anything like previous batches, it won’t last long!

Notes on the Napkin

  • According to Men's Health magazine, Jolly Pumpkin's Bam Bière is one of "The Five Best Beers for Taco Night." Belgian and Mexican? I like it!
  • At Liberty Street Brewing, 149 W. Liberty, Plymouth, a new brew from the Sons of Liberty Small-Batch Program is just on tap, an unnamed ginger beer. Owner/brewer Joe Walters is also fermenting a Clementine Lemon Thyme Ale, made with, unsurprisingly, lemon zest. Time to tap TBD.
  • If you're a fan of Grizzly Peak's Strang Wullie Scottish Ale and missed it last time it was on tap, you're in luck: It's back, aged six months and sporting lots of malt and molasses character along with a hefty 8.8 percent ABV. Ach!
  • Heard about the first-ever A2 Brewpub Crawl coming up on May 12? If you are a Mug Club member at any of Ann Arbor's four downtown breweries (Arbor, Grizzly Peak, Blue Tractor, Jolly Pumpkin), you can buy tickets to sample beers, munch on appetizers, and chat with the brewers at each establishment about their wares. More details to come.
That's all the earth-friendly brews fit to pint this time around. Until next week, keep that loincloth buried deep in your underwear drawer. Please.
