Greetings, ghouls and boys! Are you prepared for the terror that awaits you as yet another Halloween approaches? The eerie rustle of leaves in a spectral wind, the creaking of an old attic door, the cry of disembodied laughter on the breeze, and the disquieting sound of things that go burp in the night.

Wait, what? OK, don’t worry about that last one — it’s probably just one of the many lost souls who have had too many of the great beers on offer at the various goings-on in your latest Week in Beer.

Oct. 22
» Whole Foods Cranbrook, 990 W. Eisenhower, is back with another installment of Michigan Beer Tasting Night, this time featuring Arcadia Ales of Battle Creek. Thrill to the $3 glasses of excellent craft beer! Gape at the $1 sample pours! And swoon over varied pricing on bottles! All at the wine and beer bar from 5-7 p.m.

» Who wants to invest in a brewpub? Don’t lie; you know you do. So get ready to rise and shine and head to Chelsea at 10 a.m. for an informational meeting conducted by biochemist and home brewer Chris Martinson about his proposed Chelsea Alehouse project. Those interested with piles o’ cash, or just plain curious lovers of good beer, should visit chelseaalehouse.com and e-mail info@chelseaalehouse.com for more information, including where to go.

» When you’re done in Chelsea, you’ll want to hit Arbor Brewing, 114 E. Washington, for the release of Knauflager, the Vienna-style winner of Best in Show at this past May’s Ann Arbor Brewers Guild Brews Crews homebrew competition. Join proud homebrewer Jim Satin in his moment of triumph, and toast him with a pint of his victorious Vienna.

» Up for a road trip? Get to Eastern Market in The D for the Michigan Brewers Guild Detroit Fall Beer Festival (formerly the Harvest Ale Festival) from 1-6 p.m. Ann Arbor’s finest craft brewers will be repping their wares alongside their Metro Detroit compatriots. If you missed the Summer Beer Festival, first, shame on you. Second, here’s your chance to make it up! Tickets are $35 in advance; go to the Brewers Guild website for more information and to order.

» Beer Professor Rene Greff’s latest beer appreciation class at Arbor Brewing is “Beer from Around the World,” from 6-9 p.m. in the Tap Room. Tuition is $49 and includes tastes of 10 different styles from across This Island Earth. Spots were available as of this writing, but advance registration is required through Washtenaw Community College’s Lifelong Learning program. Needless to say, you must have attained the proper government-approved drinking age.

» Bring your mad pumpkin-carving skillz to the Corner Brewery, 720 Norris, Ypsilanti, from 6-8 p.m. for a carving contest. Grab your tools, pumpkin, and brilliant ideas and hit the lounge in anticipation of winning some awesome prizes. Children are welcome with parents.

» Beer and a scary movie — what a great combination! Experience both at Original Gravity, 440 County, Milan, from 8:30 p.m. on. And of this writing, owner and brewer Brad Sancho had yet to divulge which scary movie would be screening, but check OG's website for updates.

Notes on the Napkin

  • Wolverine State Brewing is go! Word from the bureaucrats on high in Lansing is that "Thou art allowed to sell beer to people who want to buy it." Stay tuned for more info on the grand opening of the 2019 W. Stadium tap room, and congratulations to the Wolverine team on being official. Now serve us some great beer!

I'll be there as well. Missed out last year, but I'm ready to get my harvest on this weekend! P.S. If anyone knows of any other Halloween events going on at our various local breweries and bars, feel free to share.

I, too, hope to see many in Detroit this Saturday. It was a hoot last year!

The coolest thing about this story, other than my obvious glee over getting approved to sell beer to people who want to buy it, is that our town has such a sweet craft beer culture! We are looking forward to adding our bit to the mix! Way to go Arbor Brewing! See you ALL Saturday at Eastern Market! A2Beer Wench
