Top 5: My favorite veggie burgers in Washtenaw County

Courtney Sacco | AnnArbor.com

I consider myself a veggie burger connoisseur.

Nine years after switching to a strictly vegetarian diet, I've tried veggie burgers from way too many restaurants to count and I've prepared a number of my own creations.

Although it can sometimes be a challenge to dine at restaurants as a vegetarian, many places, especially in Ann Arbor, offer a veggie burger as the go-to option. These burgers — typically prepared with a mix of ingredients such as beans, grains, vegetables and soy protein — are low in fat, high in protein and can actually taste good, too. I promise.

This week, AnnArbor.com asked readers to share where they’ve enjoyed their favorite local burgers (the “real” kind), but the good ole’ veggie burger deserves some love, too.

Although I certainly haven’t tried every veggie burger in Washtenaw County, here are some of my local favorites:

Frita Batidos

French fries…on top of a burger? This Cuban-inspired restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor totally overhauled my relationship with black bean burgers. It’s served on a soft egg bun — although I usually replace the bun with romaine lettuce — and you can add an array of toppings. I top mine with tropical coleslaw and avocado spread. If I’m feeling spunky, I’ll also add a sunny side up egg. The Frita knockoff is also one of my favorites to recreate at home.

Bagger Dave’s

What can I say; sometimes it’s all about the toppings. On its own, the veggie burger from this Michigan-based restaurant chain isn't spectacular, but you can make all sorts of crazy combinations with the black bean burger as the base. I order the Santa Fe Chipotle Burger (veggie-style), which is topped with Bagger Dave’s chipotle sauce, guacamole, romaine lettuce, pepper jack cheese and tomato, served on a honey wheat bun.

Zingerman's Roadhouse

I appreciate a creative veggie burger. The combinations really are endless, since you can basically throw any vegetarian ingredients into a food processor and call it a veggie burger. But the creation at Ann Arbor's Zingerman’s Roadhouse, a New Mexico Black Bean and Hominy Burger, is particularly delicious. Roasted garlic, red peppers and onion are mixed into the patty, which is topped with avocado, New Mexico green chilies, lettuce, onion and pickles. It’s served on a Bakehouse onion roll. Seriously, this burger is an explosion of flavors.

Great Plains Burger Co.

I only recently discovered the veggie burger at Great Plains Burger Co. on Ann Arbor’s Plymouth Road, but I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant makes its own black bean burger that you can top with a number of free ingredients. I like jalapenos, sauteed mushrooms and barbecue sauce. But I’ll be honest: the real reason I’ll be returning is because of the perfectly salted, hand-cut French fries.

Old Town

I have a love-hate-then love again relationship with tempeh. Typically made from fermented soybeans, tempeh has a unique, nutty flavor. It can be super delicious, but I also get tired of it quickly. I won’t eat it for months, and then I’ll circle back for more. Not many restaurants in Washtenaw County serve tempeh, but it’s definitely a bonus for me. The tempeh burger at downtown Ann Arbor’s Old Town Tavern is one of my favorites, although I also highly recommend the tempeh Reuben.

Honorable mentions:

Sava's Restaurant

This downtown Ann Arbor restaurant used to serve their black bean burger in a wrap, which I thought was particularly unique. It has since switched to serving the burger on a brioche bun, topped with cheddar cheese, pico de gallo and chipotle mayo. Still great. Order it with sweet potato fries if you want an added taste bonus!

Wurst Bar

I haven’t tried the veggie burger at Ypsilanti’s Wurst Bar, but I’ve heard from vegetarian friends that it’s quite tasty, especially given the restaurant’s quirky toppings.

OK, not sure that anyone will see this, but I went to Sidetrack last night and got the black bean burger. You're right, commenters! It's totally delicious.

I vote too for Sidetracks black bean burger. Thanks for suggestion of sliders there too.

Thank you for this -- you are right that veggie burgers are often the "go to" choice at many local restaurants. I live on the North side so don't get to Zingerman's Roadhouse often but am now hungry for their veggie burger and will need to make that trip soon! I would add an honorable mention for Casey's, as they have a perfectly decent veggie burger you can substitute for the regular and then load it up with your choice of toppings (I usually go for guacamole, grilled onions and grilled peppers).

I totally agree about Casey's. I actually go there all the time, and I think "perfectly decent veggie burger" is a good description. I just like the atmosphere there and that I can drive!

I have been told many times that the veggie burger at what was formerly Red Hot Lover's is spectacular. Or at least it was. Unfortunately the place isn't what it was. For a start, they need to rip out those *six* stupid cameras that were installed by the doofus from NYC who bought the place and ran it into the ground.

Or Ray's Red Hots as it's called now. http://www.annarbor.com/business-review/red-hots-returning-to-east-university/

I tried the tofu dog once at Red Hot Lover's because I heard so many great things about it. I didn't love it, but I might have to give it another go.

@Nicholas, if you are Chicago Dog enthusiast I suggest a trip out to Hippo's in Troy at Maple and Rochester road. Their Chicago Dogs are phenomenal and the owners are really nice people with a loyal crew. Closed on Sundays though. so remember that.

So many veggie burgers, so little time! :) I'd throw a recommendation in for the mushroom burger at Grizzly Peak. It's pretty tasty and offers up something a little different from the more typical black bean variety.

I'm a devoted omnivore, but the mushroom burger at Grizzly Peak is absolutely delicious. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a good beer and a good meal.

I don't love that one, but it's definitely different than most! I like to order the chicken cous cous salad from Grizzly Peak - but I get super high maintenance and ask for its sans chicken, plus portobello mushroom.

Seva's has yummy veggie sliders that are made from mushrooms and nuts. They're pretty good- and that's coming from a carnivore! Nice column Lizzy.

WHAT!! How did Sidetrack not make this list. I've had veggie burgers at most of these other places and none of them come anywhere close to the size and quality of the black bean burgers served at Sidetrack in Depot town. But, I guess that is just my (and my wife's) opinion(s).

I think I've had the Sidetrack burger once before - I'm definitely going to try it again now that you've recommended it. Thanks!

Hm, I was underwhelmed by the Great Plains veggie burger, but to each his/her own! Here are a couple of my recommendations: -I know it's a chain, but I appreciate that you can swap in a veggie patty for any of the specialty burgers at Red Robin. -Black bean burger at Sidetrack in Ypsilanti is quite good. Also, they have "hippy sliders" - vegetarian mini-burgers - with cheese & salsa that my husband loves.

The "Hippie Sliders" at Sidetracks are, by far, my favorite bean burgers in the area. Subtract the cheese and salsa, and, instead, add their AMAZING BBQ sauce...it's close to heaven.

Red Robin lost my vote because they microwave Boca burgers. They end up soft and pasty. Chili's is my chain go-to if I'm on the road.

Sarah: I tried the Great Plains burger once a long time ago and didn't like it. (I think it used to be a freezer one) Now they make their own patties and it's much better.

Thanks for the tip on Frita's. Another reminder that we need to try that place sometime.

Oh, yeah. You have to try it. Aside from the black bean burger, the "best snack ever" is amazing.

Way to go Lizzy, Fritas has the best. Should be #1 out of the 5. Yum.

Thanks for this mouth-watering report! It sounds like there quite a few good veggie burgers in town--I hadn't known. Now I'm hungry!

Personally don't consider a "veggie burger" to be a burger. It is a sandwich of course, but a burger - never.

What you consider may not have a lot of bearing on this.
